so....very confused.

Yeh even with micarta ($40) and a custom kydex ($35ish) to add onto your bk2 ($58) your a few bucks shy of an esee 5. I think the busse's have their niche, and I don't belong to it. However I have always drooled over the lines of the ach-1 but for half a mortgage payment I don't think so. It better clean my house and make me dinner while im at work paying for it at that price

Great designs, blade materials, manufacturer rep.\service, easily attainable price point, etc. Those that know about and use Beckers understand. It's only the uneducated that question a Becker knife purchase. I've seen some Broken ESEE's and some broken Beckers. Not common by any means and usually caused by a fluke materials aberration or non sensible knife abuse. Freedom of choice if you want to buy something 50% more expensive, that will for all intents and purposes perform the same.

Like has been said the ESEE gives you micarta and a good sheath which is why they're more. As to the swamp rats, I think they're in a class above Beckers but only because they offer 52100 which IMO is a much better knife steel then 1095.

Edit: I wanted to add that the bashing goes both ways. I've seen members here bash ESEE. Fanboys do what fanboys do no matter what camp they're in.

I'd certainly like to see an ESEE or Swamp Rat owner do a destruction test like that other fellow. That thread where he went to town on lawn mowers, refrigerators, and concrete blocks sold me on the BK2. It's a very hefty knife, and very easy to customize. I was surprised by how heavy it was. Is the ESEE 5 the same weight?

I've seen a guy take his swamp rat crash axe to a porcelain toilet with about as much damage as the BK2 test. THAT was impressive.

Crimson, check the old BF ESEE archives for the ESEE 5 batoned into a BK 2. I believe it was done by Taganon. Crazy! I've seen some ESEE owners do some nasty stuff. Beckerheads and Ratpackers are so similiar and tend to cross the aisle so often as to be one big mob. I think both companies have the goal of bringing a strong user blade to the market at a good value price. Jeff, Mike and Ethan even collaborated on a set of kitchen knives! As for the weight, I don't have a BK 2, but the ESEE 5 is 16 ounces. It's quite a tank. Take care.

Eh, everyone different. Not much more can be said about that. ESEE/Becker's relationship is about as sound as a British pound. Collab knives, invited to attend the other's events/booths/Gatherings, we support each other, like good friends do. As for the knives, I'll take which ever one I grab first, doesn't matter to me.

As for other knives, I own a few. Its the knife culture, if we only bought the knives we needed, it would be pretty damn dull around here.

I don't get into buying expensive knives, it just doesn't suit my nature. I do have some real good friends that will drop 12K on a knife and think nothing of it. Its each person's decision to make.

Can you say that one steel is better than the other? Sure, its a matter of debate that has raged since the great rift was created. Can you say one design is better than another? Sure, its a matter of debate that has raged since the great rift was created. Its all personal, and its all relative to the person forking over the cash. I buy and collect Fiddleback Forge knives. I love'em. They are beautiful, and functional. I rarely use them, since they do cost a pretty penny, and I want to have them for a long time.

The ESEE 5 and the BK2 weigh about the same at right around a pound. They are very comparable blades. Having experimented with both the last few months, I have respect for both and am one of those guys thats a Becker and ESEE fan. I think Becker is a better setup for me as I like the contours of the grips in my hand where as the ESEE 5 feels just a little blocky but both are amazing knives. For me, add some micarta to a stripped BK2 and you have the best feeling tank of a knife you will ever find for under $100.

Let em talk smack.
A long time ago, I realized the world is full of stupid people.
I live in a rural area, thus surrounding myself with less of them.

Is there some reason that you couldn't just contour the handle scales more on the ESEE to fit your hand better? What gives it that blocky feel?

Wars rage over some Dumb stuff in this industry, not all knives are created equal, heat treat ,steel etc etc..... Beckers & ESEE do everything I need and neither one has failed me .....
ESEE & Becker are my Two favorite blades. My son carrys a BK2 ,I have a Brute and I have many of every ESEE out there and a few that are not released yet ;)

As someone fairly new to Becker I have become very fond of their blades. A lot is mentioned about quality, performance and price point which are all very valid considerations. I have BHK, ESEE, RAT, Spyderco, Benchmade, Becker, Condor, several customs and the list goes on and on.

I usually find myself aligning with the person behind the knife. I have the utmost respect for people like Sal Glesser, LT and Dan, Ethan and a few others. I also tend to lean toward the vibe that you get from {insert your manufacturer here} the people that carry these knives.

I am not the one that will be making a blanket statement that one knife is better than the other. I love knives and have a lot of different brands that I love. For me it's the combination of the users, makers and knives that are important and I feel that Becker is a place that I want to hang out.

Yes rambling, and yes, off topic. Whatever. I am having a brain salad night tonight.

Oh yeah, well I've got some fingernail clippers with serial number U812. Take that mister cool guy with neat stuff...

Are all those other brands out there two or three times as good as a Becker, doubtful. Are they somewhat better, sure , maybe, it's different for everybody. I have a bunch of different brands that I like so I'm no fan boi. There's some folks who like the ESEE blades better and I've had a couple, the handles don't jibe with me (too small, too blocky) But I WILL get a Laser Strike when they come out. I like Blind Horse a bunch and Bark river makes some excellent blades (Aurora) in particular. Now Becker, I love the blades for their simple no bullshit design, good ergonomics and quality steel. Are they works of art right out of the box, no way. But you can turn them into works of art, and folks will use them too. I know i'd hesitate to use a $400 knife from busse. Buy a BK2 or Bk 7 and beat the piss out of it, If you don't like it sell and you'll most likely get most of your money back. For what it's worth.

HERE HERE!! You can put that in your pipe and smoke it! Good stuff!
