over the years, my tastes have gone:
low end --> high end

"tactical --> traditional

So you guys can kind of figure out the chronology of this "collection".

I can see Kohai rolling his eyes heavenward at my use of the word "collection" to describe this "knife pile" (as my daughters call it).:D

Michael - nice collection, I particularly like the JW Smith cimitar with ivory scale and the big Rados stag bowie. Thanks for sharing with us.

I'm a D'Holder Collector.

Not only are you a D'Holder collector, you must be the premier D'Holder collector in the world judging from your photo site. ;)

I prescribe to your collecting philosophy of specializing in one or a limited number makers, however feel we are in the minority here.

Not that either philosophy is right or wrong as it's more about individual preference and what the collector is trying to accomplish (if anything) with his/her collection.

Kevin:

The Scagel came to me after I got interested in collecting. My father who is 82 gave me my grandfather's hunting knife earlier this year. It is an early "entry-level" Scagel... a guardless knife with a six inch blade and stag handle that was probably made sometime in the early 20's for an upscale Chicago sporting goods store. My grandfather was an avid hunter who used this knife extensively through out his life. The original finish is now in pretty poor condition but it is easy to sharpen and can really cut. I didn't even know what it was at first untill I was able to clean it up a bit and read the stamp!

Don't ask me how I managed to miss the DesRosier piece and the Winkler set from the first page. :o Gorgeous knives!

Wow! I get excited when I have a knife in a publication, can't imagine realizing one of my knives was a Scagel. ;)

IMO, the fact that your grandfather got such good use out of it even makes it a better heirloom than if it were a safe queen.

It's interesting how many makers also collect other maker's knives.

Considering how much time makers spend with their own knives, that's quite a testament to their love of knives.

Whose knives do some of you other makers collect?

I don't have many at the moment, just two.

Tony Bose

Mark Holson

I also have a couple Japanese kitchen knives from the guy who sets up at the major shows but can't remember his name right now. Very good knives BTW.

When I visited Randall in Orlando, my first impression was how isolated and rural the setting was. You have to go down a fairly long driveway, through an orange grove to the building. Entering the building, my second impression was "wow they have some real security at this place." It was old technology, but every enterance (door and window) was alarmed and there were cameras. When I saw all the scagels and randalls in the museum, I realized the reason for the security.

Threads like these where collectors identify their collections in an open forum, and also identify themselves, are research opportunities for theives. This has been proven true for art, gun, coin and antique silver collectors. Maybe not yet for knives. However, be prudent. Please protect your colllection, if not through anonymity, then through competent security, using both electronic and structural measures, supllemented by an up to date insurance policy. If you can't afford security, then don't identify the worth of your collection or who/where you are and get a good dog. :)

Kevin,

Adam had some personal problems arise after getting his J.S. in 2006, but the last I heard from him, he was still looking at getting back to his forge at some point in time.

- Joe

Im trying to get Adam to come visit this fall, matter of fact gonna call him today again about it. If so, be looking for some new work from him and some collaberations between the both of us.

I dont own alot of custom knives, sold them off over the years to buy equipment etc., here are 2 i do currently own-

This is an interesting thread, in that it shows the variety of tastes and interests we have as collectors, and goes to show why there are so many opinions out there...

I started with a Randall hunter, something that many do not even consider a "custom", but it pushed me in the right direction. My next exposure was to several knives by Ron Gaston (and that man had some FINE amber stag).
Then I met Win Heger, and he showed me what I was missing. I bought my first Loveless, my first full-integral by Velarde, and several other interesting knives by lesser-known collectors. If I'd only known...

Today, the collection consists of the following:
Randall
Gaston
Velarde
Kressler
Goltz
Loveless
Lake
Scagel
Winkler
Fisk
Ankrom
Dean
Newton
Sawby
Young
