So what does a knife guy (read enthusiast) look like?

I'm typically wearing some sort of geeky t-shirt with jeans or chords, with the legs tucked into my mid-calf Maine Hunting Shoes (Bean Boot varient) and a bandana folded into a band and tied at the neck. Often wearing a coachman's hat. I have Victorian-style sideburns, too. The resultant combination looks good but I stand out strongly in a crowd. :D

We look really, really normal:

Can't tell you what a knife guy looks like...
But I can tell you what what this knife girl looks like.
5'8" 190lbs A few tattoos and piercings. Short messy dark brown hair. Jeans, Tee, Nikes, and knives clipped to the pockets.

In all seriousness.. we all look different, there is no set "look" that knife people have. You couldn't pick us out of a crowd. We're just.... people.

This is me. Without glasses and before I took my lip rings out.

This is me with glasses before I took my lip rings out.

So now I'm lip ringless and I have let my hair grow a lot. Oh and I have new glasses lol.

Oh, after the lip rings were gone but still old glasses and no hair, and my friend.

Man I LOVE my mini! My favorite gun to shoot, period.

despite owning a couple Daniel Defense ARs, my 2 Minis and my SOCOM 16 EASILY are my favorite long guns. theres just something about that utterly reliable rolling bolt design.

6'4" 315#
(summer) Cargo shorts, birkenstocks, usually some type of button down shirt, and straw panama hat.
(winter) Wool cargo pants, wool socks, birkenstocks, wool sweater, insulated flannel, and tilley winter hat.
(during inclement weather, or when I'm off the beaten track, the birkenstocks are, of course, replaced with proper footgear)

I am the rare beast known as the liberal knife nut. I also have an American Pit Bull Terrier, so I'm somewhat odd for a liberal. Still when it comes to social/political issues other than weapons laws I am firmly on the liberal side. I'm 5'6'' 200lbs, with a tattoo on each arm.

Caucasian. Six feet tall. Athletic build. Bald head. Captain Spaulding beard. Very heavily tattooed. I always wear earth tones or black, and always boots. I always have a minimum of two folding knives, one fixed blade, one multi-tool, and one pistol on me. None are visible while wearing my normal clothes.

I often use my Spyderco Resilience (4-1/4" blade) to open blister packages at stores. Not trying to show off or scare anybody; it's just my EDC. Not everybody likes this, but I really don't care.

6'3, 165lbs, Caucasian, long hair (down to the small of my back), glasses; typically dressed in jeans, a band shirt like RHCP or similar, button down overshirt (hides the very slight bulge of my .45), and nike or converse to round it off. I carry an Emerson gypsy jack n' a Spydie lum chinese for the benefit of those not-so-fond of knives. Not to mention a 1911 but that's never been seen by the general public. Never been necessary thankfully :)

Shaved or nearly shaved head, white/grey goatee, usually business casual dress and somewhere frmo two to five knives on me... For different uses, or because I cuoldn't decide that morning...

Anyways its not the size of the knife, its how you use it. :D
Maybe the problem is that the knife was too big? Haven't you ever cut open a box and accidentally sliced too deep, cutting whatever was in the box? I've done that a handful of times and that's why I started carrying smaller knives to EDC. The worse was when I was cutting the cardboard that was wrapped around the tubes of my brand new carbon fiber mountain bike frame. I was EDCing a spyderco chinook 1 that day and that's all I had so I was being as careful as I can.

If you know what the knife looks like it doesn't exactly allow you for much control. I accidentally put a 2 inch gash on the top tube.

So.... if I just bought a new bike or if I was the shop owner and my employee was cutting the box with a 3.5" knife I would be a little concerned too.
