...so what is Bushcraft?

My family has lived up in the SW Virginia mountains for better than 250 years. I first learned about the outdoors from older family members.
To this day, I look at bushcraft as a way to connect to the times and conditions that my family endured and prospered in.

Besides its fun to just be out in the woods doing 'woodsy' things. :D

I find that the term bushcraft is really for insiders to painfully pick apart . Try telling someone inexperienced you practice bushcraft. THEM "Bushcraft? One of those artsy hedge trimmers right?" ME "No No No, (head shake) I mean like the outdoors thing." THEM "Oh I get it, camping." ME "Well, it's more complicated than that. It involves skills for survival or just some level of self-sufficiency in the wilderness.".THEM "Oh, like Bear Grylls". ME "I give up".

I might as well ask them their thoughts on the best edge geometry and its relationship to cutting ability.

I wouldn't worry about it so much... We're the only ones who care.

Alan

I thought bushcraft is the ability to craft a wooden spoon in the bush. Very useful when I forget my titanium spork. :p:D

Seriously, to me it simply means, "the ability to live where you are, with what you have". I never associate it with survival, it may come in handy if your in a survival situation in the bush, but the bush isn't the only place survival situations arise.

G'day Marcelo

To be honest, the Bush component of the word is simply the name we here in Australia (& I believe in parts of Africa as well) have given to natural areas outside of human settlements.

From what I understand, "Woods" or "Wilderness" would be the words used to describe the same areas in the Nth Hemisphere.

Kind regards
Mick

In North America the term is almost a century old. The term "bush pilot" was first used in Canada in 1919. In Alaska, in 1924.

For me it does not need to be a specific term or phrase - bushcraft sounds great....

We live in very comfortable settings - carpets, ceiling fans, heaters, A/C units, big screen TVs - all of which makes us soft both in body and mind - Cable is out!!! OMG it is the end of the world....(especially if it is playoff time)

When I get out of the house and go outside this reminds me that I am truly alive when I am out of doors and romping through the woods. Getting back to nature sounds like I should whip out the granola and hug a tree yet getting back INTO nature fills a void in my life that cannot be met by sitting in front of my big screen television.

So what does all this mean? It means I can get out and play in the woods and have a cigar or pipe.... :)

You guys are all way off.

Bushcraft is the art of modifying bushes. This takes many forms, including but not limited to; Topiary, Bonsai, hedge labyrinths, and shrubberies. Bushcraft was invented by this man:

His name was Roger. He was a Shrubber and he arranged, designed, and sold shrubberies.

:D

I'll throw my hat in the ring, it's nothing more than a set of skills that allow you to live in the bush.

Here's where it gets split, traditional bushcraft (using old technology) modern bushcraft, (using new technology)

There really is very little difference, once you set aside the choice of equipment.

Now Roger the Shrubber was truly a bushman!!!!:)

Well, you know that tip about the drill being as thick as your thumb. The chicks aren't impressed with that. Just a suggestion :D[/QU

From what I know of old english law the "Rule of Thumb" had chicks considering small handed men. A man was legally allowed to "discipline" his wife and children as he saw fit so long as the switch was no thicker than his thumb.
Twas not a good time to be a feminist.

I was an outdoorsman long before someone forced bushcrafter on woodsmen.
so overplayed and so many boring redundant videos as previously mentioned.

Perhaps it should have been the rule of wrist:p "Boondock Saints"

When I say "bushcraft", I simply mean any typical activity you would do in the wilderness. Starting a fire, making a shelther, digging a hole to poo in... you don't have to be an isolationist hippy, a militant survivalist, or a weekend warrior yuppy. It's just a label for those activities.
