So, what's "the knife" right now?

For a couple years, "the knife" was the PM2. Someone asks for an EDC suggestion, and there would be about twenty million (rough estimate) posts suggesting that the OP get a PM2. In threads where the price range was limited, they would generally say "Get a tenacious, but, don't, and instead save up and get a PM2."

So what is it now? The options have expanded so much and such suggestion threads are rarely so unanimous.

What is the current iconic EDC knife?

Or is there one?

And people say the PM2 isn't overrated or over hyped. All I say to that is lol.

My opinion for "the knife" right now is a Ontario rat 2. I don't own one but I would say its a matter of time is all.

Never really thought there was a "the knife", but the PM2 was a very popular knife after coming out, and for good reason.

edit- needler420...It definitely wasn't just "hype", and still isn't. It backed it up. Hype is when untruths are told to build something up, and make it seem better than it is.That wasn't/isn't the case.

I'd say if at a mid to lower price point the PM2 would still be recommended a lot, and maybe more than others.
One of the ZT's(562CF) would probably get recommended more than others at a higher price point. And for mid-techs a Sebenza would more than likely be recommended the most.
Just speculation on my part.

read a lot on the boards about the griptillian, it's always high on recomendation lists. I am considering getting one myself.

I still see de Delica or the Minigrip as a can't going wrong first knife...
But they've been also around like forever :)

If I had my way it would be the CRKT Squid. I love smaller knives and am hugely appreciative of the recent expansion in great small-sized options from custom makers and production companies alike. And with the cheap price of the Squid, in my ideal world people would use the money saved on it to dive straight into purchasing sharpening equipment and learning to sharpen and maintain their edges, something I don't think is stressed enough when it comes to new enthusiasts.

I realize after typing the above that it's less of an objective answer and more of an expression of what I'd like to see, but I tried!

In a 3" and under...the Sage 2 with those great titanium scales.
In "over" 3"...yes, it's still the PM2. You can't beat success.

IYes the para 2 is still the best bang for your buck "it" knife. Coming out in carbon fiber and cpm m4 soon as well as s110v. The gayle bradley 2 is also coming out

I'm in a mood to try out Emersons, but Paramilitary and a Griptillian would be what I would recommend to people.

Budget category...... Kershaw Link is taking over. Mid. category still PM2. When you start to get into higher priced knives I don't believe there's really any clear cut winner, tastes vary but Sebenza's are still up there.

I bought Rat 2's for all the guys at work last Christmas. They seem to like them. I personally wouldn't own one. Weak liners, won't hold an edge, sharpens up ok but I'm getting tired of doing it for them every 2 weeks. If I'd have known all of this beforehand I wouldn't have bought them. Oh well, they seem to be happy with them but they really don't know any better, lol.

From what I've seen, these are about the most recommended EDC's by price these days:

Really low price - Ontario Rat
Low price - Kershaw Blur or Leek
Mid price - Manix
Upper mid price - PM2 or BM 940
High end - Personal preference

Don't care so much for current trends, Benchmade 940 is the current knife for me. Spyderco just barely ranks above Cold Steel IMO...Too much of the same sameness.
