So, what's "the knife" right now?

From what I've seen, these are about the most recommended EDC's by price these days:

Really low price - Ontario Rat
Low price - Kershaw Blur or Leek
Mid price - Manix
Upper mid price - PM2 or BM 940
High end - Personal preference

I think you've pretty much nailed it there. Throw in the Kershaw Link in the "low price" category and I'd say that's pretty conclusive.

Speaking of which, I need to get one of those... The aluminum blackwash tanto version is juuuust different enough from everything else I own that I can totally talk myself into it (provided I get rid of something else)

Spyderco. It doesn't matter which one. The Hole wins and Sal is too cool.

Low price - Kershaw Blur or Leek, Manix 2 lightweight, Delica

Upper mid price - BM 940, ZT Titanium flippers, Gayle Bradley, Domino, Southard, Kizer's
High end - Personal preference

My opinion on your post.

Though feature and material wise, the 940 is close to the PM2 and Manix 2, price wise its in that upper mid-price.

Once you go over $200, you get into production companies flagship and limited edition knives. You are also looking at small production and "mid-tech" such as Brous, Three Sisters Forge, and Southern Grind to name a few.

The Link is the must have low end knife for me. Its just I have too many in this category. I need to sell off my other knives I don't use its just I can't bring myself to do so. I need to get over it and get it done but its hard especially when most are discontinued.

I would add a ZT0808 to the upper mid price but that is my personal list.

I left it out because it's 420hc. Good stuff, but not as good as Kershaw's 14c28n on the Blur and Leek, which have proven year after year to be awesome knives, and are in the same price range.

I still think the entry level of a really good knife would be the PM2 or the BM Grip.

I haven't really seen anything to change that at the moment.....

It's the griptilian, and has been for awhile

Don't own a PM2 and don't think I ever will but, I feel it is still "the knife".

Benchmade's Griptilian could be a contender except for the MAP pricing problem.

If you want to go down in price then it becomes the Kershaw Blur, and the Rat 2, in that order.

If you are looking for something a little different than the Rat, the Utilitac 2 comes into the game.

If I had my way it would be the CRKT Squid. I love smaller knives and am hugely appreciative of the recent expansion in great small-sized options from custom makers and production companies alike. And with the cheap price of the Squid, in my ideal world people would use the money saved on it to dive straight into purchasing sharpening equipment and learning to sharpen and maintain their edges, something I don't think is stressed enough when it comes to new enthusiasts.

I realize after typing the above that it's less of an objective answer and more of an expression of what I'd like to see, but I tried!

Friends don't let friends carry CRKT folders.

A box cutter from your local hardware store.

This, by far, is a better choice than any CRKT folder.

Another vote for the PM2, I have much more expensive knives but use the Para almost exclusively.

Hottest knife right now seems to be the ZT 562 cf

Hottest knives of all time are the PM2, BM 940,

For fixed blades survive! Knives are untouchable.

Also the Mora Bushcraft black is very popular

Hottest fixed blade of all time for the masses is the BK 2

Here at BF I think the PM2 is still "the knife".
I have a couple and it is an awesome knife but nowhere near my favorite.
I tend to switch up my edc setup depending on work, play, season, or whatever but no matter what my setup is for the day I always have a Vic on my person.
Either a Classic or Minichamp on my keys and I am pretty sure for the entire world, in terms of volume, the Vic Classic is "the knife".

I bought Rat 2's for all the guys at work last Christmas. Weak liners, won't hold an edge, sharpens up ok but I'm getting tired of doing it for them every 2 weeks. .

It was a VERY nice gesture which is coming back to haunt you...every two weeks. For this coming Christmas, consider this... I bought a few of the "Greens" and passed them around...seemed to work okay. I carry one in my wallet. You can shop around at our dealers...see who has the best price on "a few.."
The link shows the product lineup...

FWIW: I ALWAYS seem to come back to PM2's...love these things...even in basic S30V.

The opinion of someone who clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. CRKT has plenty of bad knives, but the Squid is not among them. Neither is the Eros, the Ripple, the No Time Off, the Carajas, the Hootenany, the Eraser, or the Swindle, to name just a few.
