So which one is tiger hide?

OK, here's another stumper. What is this one?

IMG_0215.jpg

This is like tiger hide, except the black-gray layers and the red-yellow layers are reversed, i.e., more black less red!

Nuclear Black Linen micarta.

(no, not really! :D)

Does this mean the tiger hide is becoming like the old snakeskin?

This is described as snakeskin:
DSC_0270.jpg

As you can see, it clearly has a black-gray-black-gray-black-gray-black-red-yellow-red configuration like in post #17 here. It's like inverted tiger hide, which is yellow-red-yellow-red-yellow-red-yellow-black-gray-black.

I would say that is Tigerhide also.
It sure isn't Black Micarta

alright, the one conclusion I guess we can gather from all this... everything is tiger hide  (young hogs, don't take that seriously)

There's a thread somewhere on that variation... It's (ETA: speculated that it's) either a THM or a GL that may not have been acceptable for it's original purpose, but still good for use and brought out for these show knives. Mine has a bit of a green tint in it, so it's hard to really tell which for sure, as even black canvas micarta can have a greenish tinge...

And just one more to ensure that everyone is utterly confused, these are both described as snakeskin on Lunde's site:
A: http://lundestudio.com/wallpaper/nark-black-snakeskin-2-hi.jpg
B: http://lundestudio.com/wallpaper/cgbatac-green-snakeskin-2-hi.jpg

Just to help those who aren't confused yet, A is the same thing as pictures 1 and 2 in post #1 of this thread, where several have called it tiger hide.
B is the same as post #17 in this thread, which has also been maybe possibly identified as tiger hide, nuclear black linen (joke :p), and a tiger hide reject.

TAKE THAT, WIKIPEDIA

I believe that its too early to tell, but remember that Snakeskin micarta was a mistake (wish MY mistakes were that cool!) that can't be duplicated so far whereas Tigerhide can, AFAIK.

The TAC handle in the top link is defimitely Tigerhide canvas micarta. Bottom link TAC handle is our old friend, Snakeskin micarta. :) Must've been a typo.

Man, there is way too much going on here. I'm gonna try to summarize this...

Tigerhide
Variation A: thick layers of red and thin layers of black

Team Gemini

Variation B: thin bands of the busse black Micarta pattern with thick bands of the Busse tan Micarta pattern (so something like black, gray, black, yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow, repeat), possibly a more detailed version of variation A

Thanks all for maybe somewhat possibly trying to get some things cleared up
Ken, not sure if I should ask this but... any examples of the "new" snake skin?

"variation B" is linen micarta, not canvas. :)
Face it, Tigerhide micarta can't be classified except to say that variations of the color orange (from almost yellow to almost red) are layered with black (even if it looks like different shades of grey). :D

What you have there is the new snakeskin.
Here the top 3 is the new and the rest are old.

thought I'd try though... regardless, thanks for the discussion :)

By the way, I have a new name suggestion for this:

that I think is more fitting of it both in its looks and in its context...

Actually, it is my understanding (IIRC) that there is no "new" snakeskin. The recent handshaped examples are pieces left from machined slabs of the original load kept for use, but too small to be machined, which is why they are handshaped.

If any Old School HOG knows better, please correct me! :)

ETA: to expand on this, the BladeForums Benefit Auction SH-v, although auctioned in '09, was donated by Jerry in '06...the same year of FBM's which had the option of machined snakeskin slabs...followed by BATAC's which also had that option, and I believe the last CG run that did.

Looks like some of the handshaped used now, yes? :)

WoW Jaxx, that's a nice one(your #27). Your probably right cause I did hear something like that being said. So it's the latest snakeskin.

I noticed in one of the most recent ganzas, Jerry called some similar looking stuff (#6 FF) black and tan  I thought black and tan only came in G10? Whatever it is, it sure is nice.

This is black-tan canvas Micarta! Just like black-tan G10!
Black-tan G10 has more black than tan; tan-black G10 has more tan than black
This "black and tan" has layers of black canvas (that greenish color we know and love) and tan canvas (that reddish-yellowish color)
And this "black and tan" has more black layers than tan layers
... this is black-tan Micarta! And maybe it's snake skin!

... and maybe tiger hide is tan-black Micarta!

Thanxx, man. :) Yeah, a lot of the handles on that run looked great.

These really turned out nice. Great combo, the Tanker Grey and um..."Nuclear Black linen", LOL! IIRC, this came from the small run that went to the A G Russell show a few years back. Many thanks to tomthebaker for the proxy help!
