The other thing is purely practical. Maybe Jeff never thought specifically in these terms, but I'm sure it made its way through his synapses one way or the other: It's difficult to start a new forum and get any real traffic, when established forums exist, and going to a large (in this case, probably the largest) established forum on this subject, you get more traffic. More traffic = more people looking at your stuff = more people buying your stuff.
BTW RAT does have a forum (Outdoor Forums), which USED to have knife content, but got almost no traffic next to their BF forum.
So it is a smart marketing decision to have their product discussion forum here.
