So, why do you carry more than one pocket knife at a time?

Normally, I don't. I might carry a pocket knife with a skinner when I'm out in the woods....... or maybe when I carry a multi-tool. Normally, it's just one pocket knife.

So, how often do you carry more than one pocket knife, and what tasks are causing you to take more than one?

:)

I can't really answer you and stay within the constraints of the traditional forum (as far as my actual daily carry goes), since I carry some non-traditionals and multitools.

Suffice it to say that there are different tasks suited better to different blade types, and they are not always all available in a single knife package.

Well, I visited a local gun show on Saturday, and saw a friend of one of my friends. This guy is a big time knife nut, and I showed him not only the knives I had on me to trade, but the knives I had in my pockets. I showed him a Northfield Missouri Trader, the Bladeforums 2012 trapper, a two blade TC barlow that Charlie spear headed (no pun intended), a one hand wonder, and I still had another knife being sharpened, and another knife in my pocket. Now, granted, most of these were just to show off, and the only one that has seen much use has been the barlow and the other one handed wonder in my pocket. The one that was getting sharpened has seen some miles too.

Our mutual friend believes in the laws of three. Three is two, two is one and one is none. Granted, I am a big guy and I am not always getting out into the "wilds", yes, there are some wild places left in the Mason Dixon area of MD/PA. I can get by with a peanut or other small folder, but I like to carry a larger knife. I don't really need more than one, but I like to have that option. One of my favorite carry options is a small fixed blade usually carried around the neck in a Skookum style rig, and a SAK, mainly on any long walks, or hikes. Why two blades? I don't know, maybe because I can. I usually have at least a SAK or old timey folder, a larger one handed wonder and a fixed blade.

I guess that's why some members on here prefer to carry a knife with two blades. If one breaks, you still have the other blade to use.

I always carry a very small knife in my coin/watch pocket of Levis, because it was a gift from the wife. It is pretty nice and I fondle it throughout the day. In my regular pocket I carry whatever EDC knife I decide on.

I'll usually carry a little pen or jack in my watch pocket, also. I'll use this for most of my knify needs, but I also usually have something larger that I use for lunch each day.

One for serious use and one because I like it, or one for serious use and one for use in front of fraidy cats. If I had only one knife, it used to be some sort of scout or SAK, but recently I've been carrying a swisstool on my keychain, so I don't necessarily need the scout. The other day I suddenly had to countersink some screws, and I had only my favorite Barlow by Ulster with its thin blades. It worked fine, but at the moment I have one knife for serious use and one for borderline abuse in my pockets (a well-worn HSB with epoxy putty handles).

Usually a Kershaw blur with straight edge in one and a traditional slipjoint in the other. A small flashlight and multi tool is never far away.

I like the combo of a SAK and a fixed bladejust for utilty purposes - and sometimes two SAKs or a SAK and a stockman with one in my shirt pocket and one in my pants pocket or, more likely, on a lanyard in my back pants pocket as a matter or easy accessability - it's easier when sitting at my desk working or when driving to access a shirt pocket knife than to try to dig down into a pants pocket.

My EDC is a Victorinox Rambler that lives on my keychain. The blade doesn't see much use but the tools sure do! I carry a small folder in my left front pocket that does most of my cutting chores and a one-hander clipped to my right front pocket. I still carry a one-hander mostly out of habit but it sure does come in handy from time to time. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, I reckon. :)

Technically I carry 2 every day. A little SAK on my keys and a regular 2 blade pocket knife. Sometimes I'll switch things and carry 2 pocket knives in addition to the SAK. Usually a knife that has a clean blade for food prep and another knife that can be used for dirtier tasks. A favorite back when I would do this was a CSC HMT/GEC #48/ Queen #11 and a GEC #25 sheepsfoot or #61 Half Congress. Most days though I just carry a 2 blade jack or pen knife with the SAK.

I typically always carry 3 while I am at work. I carry My GEC BN for general knife work and food prep and such. A Leatherman Juice for obvious reasons. Lastly, my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 for self defense... and the fact that it can easily be flicked open if my other hand is busy. This is just my current setup and I swap a few around from time to time but I will usually always have a knife to suit each of these rolls.

Because I have between 5 and 10 pockets, depending on what I am wearing!
Also, I don't hand my T. Bose to just anyone, so I always have another nice sharp knife for my friends who have grown to expect it, and occasionally ask to borrow it!
Buncha slickers, but good friends!! I'm always working on them to carry a knife or two!
I have convinced one "auntie" that she can't live without a Barlow! She's much happier now!!

I can definitely see it when carrying an expensive custom. I'd really like a T Bose, or one of the other's fine makers products.... it's really hard for me to justify the price, but if I did, I'd carry an extra cheapie for that reason.

A small like case tadpole or tiny trapper for light use especially around non knife people or environments. A medium to large like a case cv copperlock, back pocket or lately BF knife. In case you actually need a real knife. And a third it used to be a case I got used but lately a rough rider in case someone asks to use a knife I have posted about this before. Sometimes when I need a knife I'll ask a young person to use theirs when they say they don't have one I use that third one then give it to them. I can't imagine not having a knife but these kids today especially in town may not have ever owned one. Once they get the first one and find out how handy having a knife can be they are " in the fold". You know there are very few things in this world that you can get for so little that can be so handy everyday. Not to mention properly cared for will last a lifetime.

I usually carry two. A traditional in my left, or watch pocket, and a one hand opening knife with a clip in my right.

Sometimes I'll carry a fixed blade on belt, or a small neck knife as well.

edit- noticed the post asked why. I just like knives is one reason. Also, if I have a fish, a box, or something in my left hand I want a knife I can get to, and open with one hand.

I think it's nice to have a wide selection of blades in small packages.

I carry one high end main folder for cutting regular things and one cheaper SAK for doing things which aren't so good for the knife.

Another reason for carrying an extra, cheaper knife, is to have one for whenever someone wants to borrow a knife (and you're not 100% sure what he's gonna do with it).

I suppose it depends on what you call carry. I usually only have one in my pocket EDC, but I have a multitool with a knife on it in pack/ computer bag, a quick assisted folder in the car, and also often a balisong in the car for flipping at lights and such. I have a long commute and I get bored. When I'm doing field work, I'll have a larger field knife on my belt, and a smaller folder in my pocket, as well as a hatchet, a cruisers axe or pulaski and sevaral other pokey things. All for different jobs.

For me it depends on the mood I´m in.

Being honest, it would be ok for my daily tasks to carry one knife. But sometimes (about 40 % of the time) it just feels right to carry a second knife with me. No special reason, but so it is.
