So, why do you carry more than one pocket knife at a time?

About 30 years ago I did a brief stint with a white collar job. I got in the habit of carrying a butterbean, Silver Knight, a peanut, a tiny stockman, a buck 505 (excellent knife) and a few others. Quit carrying my stockman and copperhead patterns altogether unless I was going hunting or camping and didn't even carry a medium sized knife to work. To that point in my life, I never realized how much of my daily chores a really sharp little knife would handle.

Got into the habit of carrying a small knife and I still carry one of the little fellas daily. But a larger more robust knife is a must in my line of work back in the blue collar world. So I just carry both sizes and I am completely covered. The solution came to me when I tried my first pocket clip knife that I saw recommended here on BF. Now I can clip one on the pocket and keep one in the pocket so I don't really notice either one is there. Both get used every day.

Because we can?:D

I always have two knives on me. My precious is always in my right pocket, but I can't leave the house without my little SAK clasic on my keys. So you can say I always have two pocket knives on me. On some rare occasions I will have a third one depending on some special planed event. If I'm going fishing or woods walking, I'll have a belt knife, but that's not in the same class.

one for serious use and one for use in front of fraidy cats.

Sometimes I carry only one knife, but if I'm carrying a larger folder, I also like something small for the reason above, particularly with popular attitudes to knives here. Setting that aside, depending on what folder I'm carrying I might like to back it up with a SAK or a multi-tool. If I'm going out to the woods, I might carry a sheath knife too.

I have convinced one "auntie" that she can't live without a Barlow! She's much happier now!!

LOL! You are like the Barlow Preacher Charlie! :D

I think I do it so that I can get more knives into my daily rotation! If I am in jeans, one always goes into the coin pocket and then my larger edc goes into the left pocket. Different shaped blades is always a plus just in case.

I'm always (always, always) curious about how a given blade will handle any given task. That is what drives me to carry at least two, and occasionally three knives on me at any given time. Certain tasks practically scream for a given blade with a certain profile. For relatively light & 'clean' tasks that could benefit from fine slicer, I like my Schrade 8OT or a 'carbone' Opinel. For dirtier/messier tasks, a stainless blade is usually the preference. For really heavy jobs, like cutting very abrasive material or, heaven forbid, a task demanding a 'sharpened prybar' (almost never, for me), a heavier/thicker blade in wear-resistant steel (440C Buck 112, D2 Queen 'Country Cousin', any thicker S30V blade) is a good option. Having all of these options available to me, wherever I happen to be, is always a good thing. :)

Traditional in right front pocket, one hand opener in left front pocket, leatherman juice in belt pouch and sometimes another one hand opener in right back pocket. The knives themselves and pockets used varies but I've always got these types of knives with me - Why?? Because I can and I like knives.

Medium to large frame (3.5"-4.25") slipjoint in the watch or front pocket. 80% of the time I stop there. The other 20% of the time I drop my #23 pioneer or buck 110 in my backpocket next to my wallet.

I'm with Ed,I always carry 2 and most of the time 3.A handmade traditional,a production traditional, and a OHW for folks to barrow.
I just like knives and work in a knife freindly outfit.Sometime I even have 4 because everyone at work knows I'm a maker and they want to see the latest things off the bench.:D

This is my prototypical 2 knife carry:

I use my pocket knives for food and cutting wood quite a bit. I would like a fixed blade with me, but alas, this seems to be frowned upon in this establishment!!

Anyway... I like folding lockers that are in that paring knife/steak knife size range, typically with blades right around 3.5".

A mini-multitool has earned it's keep in my LFP. Just too dang useful, especially the scissors and cap lifter.

Traditional slipjoint for the sheeple (and because they're just timeless classics) and a one-hander for serious duty.
I fondle both daily...during work...a lot.
When i was younger, i played with myself, now i play with my knives.

I carry anywhere from one to three traditional knives every day. Not counting any straight blades or multi tools I might also have about my person. WHY? You ask? Just because.
Here in West Virginia, there is no stigma attached to the possesion of a knife. Rather the stigma is in NOT possesing a knife.

I rarely carry more than one knife at a time, but when I do, the second is always a locker, either another traditional or a modern OHO.

I carry a SAK with my traditional for the extras it has. I don't want to use my stockman as a screw driver. Its funny how many times things come up the SAK comes in handy. And there are some days I can't decide which one, so I grab 2.

I've changed. I'm down to one small traditional now. Unless I am fishing or riding and then I'll add a leek to my back pocket or a fixed blade. But I been getting by alright with one. ;) Pants don't hang so low either. This was a hard transition for me.

My question wasn't based on stigma... after all, I'm in Louisiana. It was more of "what are the practical reasons" for doing so?

My comment about stigma was simply a statement. Others have posted about and "sheeple" and so on. Some carry one or more knives for no practical reason whatsoever.

ALWAYS carry a SAK....always. Almost always have a quality folder in pocket as well. While in the woods or around the homestead working tend to carry a larger fixed-blade for general use.....heavier cutting, prying, etc. I also always have a larger knife in a dangler coupled with a Granfors Bruks ax. I know why have a large knife and an ax?? Love the feel of both.....and I always have a Winkler II belt knife strapped to my pack for utility use.

I carry a SAK and have for 30+ years on a daily basis. In the past couple years I have taken to carrying a Bret Dowell folder as well. I find I can use the "multi tools" on the SAK, but if I just want to cut, etc. with an excellent bladed knife, the Dowell is the correct tool.

I agree with what Henry44 said, it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Great statement.

Good point! ;)

I was really just thinking about someone having one knife for certain chores and the second for a different set of chores.
