So, you think your knives are sharp?

Well then here are a few tests that Jimmy Fikes uses to test knives;
1) Cut cigarette papers hanging from clothes pins
2) Set a cigarette in a rifle cartrige and cut it WITHOUT tipping the case over.
3) Cut a half inch thick, 6 inch wide hard leather belt with one stroke while it's suspended from a strip of half-inch masking tape, without breaking the tape.

These tidbits where pulled from this month's Blade Magazine living legend section.

Thanks for the thread, mross; interesting... I would certainly say that Jimmy Fikes' knives are sharp when they pass these three tests!

I sure hope that Dan Koster doesn't read this thread; we need him to focus on getting his projects finished. :D

No expert- but I don't think thick blades would do as well in those tests as thin blades. So, not really a valid test for a Khuk.

I don't smoke and don't wear 6 inch wide belts. Therefore I am not able to compare my knives with his. However, I'm sure my sharpening abilities would allow me to bludgeon the tobacco out of a cigarette laid flat on a piece of 6 inch belt held in place by masking tape. :)

Me too Bruise, me too.:grumpy: I've never had or seen a knife that sharp, damned sure wouldn't want to "feel" the edge on it with my thumb!!!!

Jimmy Fikes must be making laser knives or light sabre knives to get them that sharp.
I wonder how wide the strip of masking tape holding the six inch wide belt is?

Edit:
Doh! I see now where it says 1/2" tape. That's incredible!!!!

Mross, what month of Blade is the article in?
I have June's issue but as frequently as they come out I just may not of received July's issue yet.

Yeah, the last one sounds kind hard to buy, if you read the test cutting competion articles (I posted a few tidbits) you will find truth stranger then fiction. I would love to see a video, mayhaps I will find one in my web wandering. There are alot of Fikes Fans out there.

As our own Dan is an ABS apprentice I'm sure he is aware of this stuff.

6 inch wide, 1/2 inch thick belts at that.

The thickest leather that Tandy Leather sells (which is leather for making armor/shields) is 16 ounces. That translates to 1/4" thick. Where can you buy some 1/2" thick leather?

Just wait 'till I get my belt sander!!! I'll shave the hair off a fly's leg or something equally outlandish! :D :D

Come on, 1/2" tape? I don't think so.

Hey, you got a problem with my style?!

You're taller than me and could probably pull it off. A six inch belt on me could probably be called a leather mini skirt.
