Maybe it mostly depends on which knife I happen to have on me, what the establishment is like, and who I'm with, but yeah, I hit that age.

I was taught not to saw into the plate at an early age by a man who grew up in an era where undercooked food was a legitimate hazard, and wouldn't eat meat that was remotely "bloody". The steak knives at home were well used and well cared for. Restaurant steak knives are only good if they're new, in my experience, but I also appreciate a pink center far more than my father, so my meals usually take less effort to cut into morsels. Lately, though, I assume as a cost savings measure, I've been provided nothing but blunt knives at restaurants, and I'm tired of it. Rather than bother the waitress with it, I'm far more inclined to employ my own implement.

However, in the case of a loose handle or other damage, I will strongly recommend to staff that they remove that knife from circulation before somebody gets hurt or poisoned by some ick that was allowed to progenerate in the gap. Don't put the crusty silverware in your mouth, folks.

I order two steaks and use one as cutting board.

J/K. Honestly, I've never been to a place with plastic knives only and bought a steak. Like Uma above, I would get a burger instead or a dish that's more work than a steak at home. Like Spaghetti and meatballs, etc.

I use my own every time I eat steak or any other red meat. Never ever with a serrated knife.
Umm . . .well yes I have used my knife at a restaurant.
As an occasional expedient though, not as a statement of any kind. I am legally blind and just getting food into pieces small enough o chew and swallow often is a challenge.
whatever it takes without making a case for a or against serrated vs plain but wicked sharp.

Whatever works or you . . .as Larry the Cable Guy so often says, "Git-'er'dunn!"

Mine..."Solo 2" from Spyderco, these came out way back in the mid-90s and just never got the attention from dealers that they deserved🥲

Man, if I could just find one of those with a plain edge it would really scratch an itch. . .

I only order steak out on rare occassions and generally and a higher end place. still get suprised by the knives they supply. Not that I couldn't make do with a run of the mill restaurant steak knife, but why should I, when...
I will absolutely use my own. I dont make a show out of it, and even my wife doesn't realize I'm doing it until I use my napkin to wipe off my knife and put it away after the steak is done. Nobody from the restaurant has ever said a thing to me. only occassionally has someone that was dining with me even noticed.

Well, contrary to most of my friends posting in this thread, I tend to use my own knives. A few reasons, one, no matter how high end the place*, they generally are not spending the money to keep their knives sharp, no matter how nice. Secondly, I get few chances as is to use my knives while out and about, and it's guaranteed that the knives I have on me are sharper than whatever knife I was given, so why wouldn't I? Lastly, I am able to cut my steak without the edge hitting the plate, and have never had a problem with it.

If I am not at work, I'm carrying one of my fixed blades and for the last several months, it's been my David Mary David Mary knife, top of the three. In fact, all three of these knives have cut steaks in high end joints. They all have zero edge damage, and are my absolute favorites. 🤷

* I am definitely not a stranger to such places, I've been pretty fortunate.

im picturing these fine establishments and top chefs on this topic of plastic knives and broken knives for steak.....

Barth Burgers! 😂

Actually I don't eat steak much, and if I do it's going to be at a place that A) has decent cutlery and B) has quality meat that shouldn't need for me to saw through it.

Even still, I'm not going to use my knife.

Not that I mind, but it is interesting this question gets asked about every 2 years.

Search Steak knife Restaurant there are 50 pages of results! Some are references to my favorite steak restaurant. But most are about using your own knife in a restaurant.

I learned to use my own knife in a restaurant from my Dad, I honestly thought it was normal. I associate using a good knife to cut the steak as part of the experience. Same with cutting an apple into pieces. Life is short, enjoy every moment.

He never made a show out of it, and I never do either.

He always had a knife a hankerchief a cross pen and an analog watch. If he was in overalls or a tuxedo didn’t matter.

Most of the time I use theirs, usually a Tramontina or the like comes with the plate, and I figured out something, any good steak better be buttery tender already so I won’t have to use my knife to cut it, and possibly hurt the edge on the plate!! If the steak is mostly fat and gristle, I say you are better off finding a better restaurant. 😜👍

Considering that a steak dinner out costs about as much as a full tank of gas these days, it's not really an issue :( .
Have a friend pick you up for dinner and drive there. I always find a coupon…I guess it shows how cheap…..errr wait…..how frugal I am. I remember growing up, there were six of us kids, seeing my mom or dad using a meat mallet or tenderizer to pound the cheaper cut of meat to make it more edible.
