SoCal "Survival" Hike, May 23rd.

I and a few of the guys that attended the CA Bush Bash are planning a day hike on May 23rd. In all likelyhood, it will be the 10 mile Big Santa Anita loop from the Chantry Flats area north of Arcadia.

The "survival" part is because there will probably be trap making or fire starting or fatwood hunting or something like that sometime during the hike. Maybe a survival knife comparison? Who knows.

It's nothing formal. Since I am terribly out of shape, it won't be a speed-hike (for me at least. The rest of you guys can go as fast as you want).

If you've never been hiking in that area, it's really nice. The trail difficulty is rated as "moderate."

Post if you're interested. We can hammer out the details.

HERE ARE THE FINAL DETAILS OF THE HIKE: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8232617&postcount=91

I really wanted to go to CA Bush Bash but because of my wife I couldn't... :(

I would be nicer if it was a Saturday though... :D

Damn, you must have some pretty weak dreams. :(

Checked the schedule and I can make it. Will bring another too if she can clear her schedule. I don't care which day.

W&SS Forums, where dreams become reality. heheh.

It'll be good to get to know more of the locals.

Sounds like fun and an opportunity to learn. Something is rattling around the back of my head about that date, but it's not on my calendar so this hike is there now. I cannot make Saturday, but Sunday is great. I'll probably try to talk my daughter into coming. I doubt my wife is up to 10 miles.

any idea on the times??? also what should we bring???

Well, I'm all for starting early. Like 8am? The last time I did this hike, we started at around 10:30am and we finished at around 4pm and we didn't dawdle.

As for what to bring... here's a list of my regular hiking kit:

- 100oz camelbak. I use most of it on a 10 mile hike. I've used it all on a 14 mile hike.

- Cliff Bars. I pack 2.

- Other snacks. Maybe some almonds or peanuts or a granola bar.

- Ritter Pocket Survival Kit: http://www.rei.com/product/708135

- Small 1st aid kit: http://www.rei.com/product/708124

- And maybe 10 knives.

j/k about the knives. I'll probably only have 3.

We're in, count on two of us. I'd rather get started around 9:00ish or so. That way we have time to dick around a bit. Going to being some PB&J, fruit, jerky, granola, nuts, etc. I need sustenance!

What's the parking like? Do we need a day pass?

Ray, you're assigned to bring the case of beer...bottles please. Hope you have a strong back. ;)

O.k guys im going to check on some more info and parking but you do need a wilderness parking pass... If i may suggest to start early like Mike said 8am should be best. First to make sure we do find parking also to beat the heat. Hard to say how the weather would be so far ahead but i wont be surprised if it would be HOT. Dont plan on practicing fire making. After the last few fires in the area and the last big one(station fire). You play with fire and you might get shoot by the ranger no Qs asked before or after lol. They dont take kindly to people who play with fire..

There are designated campsites along the route. We can play with fire in one of the fire pits. We don't HAVE to play with fire, but it will be possible (unless they've changed the rules around recently).

We will need adventure passes to park at the trailhead. Buy one ahead of time 'cause they will ticket you without one.

One more thing...

This is a popular trail. We'll possibly be sharing the trail with a bunch of other people. If someone can think of a better trail for us to go on, since it looks like we'll have a good amount of people going with us, please suggest it. The only reason I picked this trail was because I've done it, it's not far, and it's pretty.

so no alcohol stoves (hobo stoves) to get some hot tea, or coffee???

I am also down for 8 am... or earlier... I'd like to get back soon (got a few things to do)...

8:00 works, but any earlier is going to be rough. About a 2 hr. drive for us.

I'm good with this trail. More in it for the fresh air, exercise, and scenery than anything else.

I got home and asked my daughter about this date. She reminded me of an important school function that day so we'll have to bow out this time. I hope another SoCal day hike can be arranged on another day. I'd like to meet some faces to go with the names and learn a few new things.

Thanks,
Steve
