SoCal "Survival" Hike, May 23rd.

I got home and asked my daughter about this date. She reminded me of an important school function that day so we'll have to bow out this time. I hope another SoCal day hike can be arranged on another day. I'd like to meet some faces to go with the names and learn a few new things.

Thanks,
Steve

How about we go backpacking around that area next time???

I was just reading about this area and it seems people suggest to go up there early as parking space is limited... never been here so I don't know...

anybody carpooling???

should we make a small list of who MAY be going???

Also, I just turned 26 this past sunday, so should i be expecting any presents??? :D :D :D

I am going on a company picnic on saturday 22, but i'll be thinking about sunday the 23rd... :D :D :D

Yeah, I was reading the same thing. Since there are so many closures because of the station fire, this trail area is more popular than ever.

I think we should meet at REI at the bottom of the hill at 8am and carpool from there (Any earlier will be even harder for the out of towners). That'll help us meet up and reduce the parking spaces we'll need up top.

Here's the REI: http://maps.google.com/maps?rls=com...ocal_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBMQnwIwAA

if we park at REI,

first our cars won't get towed right? :D
second, do we need a day pass per person, or per car???

If a head count helps then two for sure here.

I like the carpooling thing. My car holds four.

Yea, would be cool to make this a semi-regular thing with different locations. Probably a drive for most of you, and a little bit of a drive for me, but Dripping Springs Trail is not far East of Temecula and is an awesome if somewhat strenuous hike. Can go an hour or two without seeing another person.

Thats where I trail run! I think i can make it, if so we really do need a roster of whose going.

Parking is typically horrid at chantry so the REI carpool is a awesome idea.

Hey it sound like we are going to have lots of new faces and a great turn out..
FUN FUN FUN

i am just wondering if 10 miles is too much now :D :D :D

i have a knee injury... i am going hiking this weekend to get it stronger... :(

I really wanna go :D

Hey Carspidey for a 26 year old i expect you to run the all way TWICE. you should look up some trekking poles if you are not using them yet. They make a huge diffrence for knees and ankles.

Sasha

i was looking at the trekking poles... but i wanted to make them myself out of thick branches... i'll try making them this week otherwise i'll see if i can get some...

any place in particular you'd recommend buying them at? any brand or model???

I got my at REI yard sale. I got a Bambo that i used for many years and it out lasted everything i got at the store twice over. It actualy showing very litter wear. You can check some places that sale Bambo like cost plus. Look for the darker bambo i found them to last much longer. But the store poles are more comfy to use with the nice handles and they can be adj to what ever lengh you want.

that's true about store poles... they end being lighter too i guess...

check this article i found on trekking poles:

I've got two bad knees, I'm 240lbs, and I'm almost 40. If I can make the hike, I'm sure you can too.

On most hikes, I'll use a single trekking pole. I don't like using two. A good stick is just as good, I think. While it's not as light, the advantage is that you can use it as a weapon. Trekking poles aren't much use as weapons unless you're a fencer.

I didn't know the geriatric ward was invited. :) Hey wait, I'm even older, have messed up hips, and no ass. How did all that happen. :(

I also use a single pole. I don't find two comfortable.
