Sodbuster Jr. or Trapper?

After doing a little more research, I think the sodbuster jr may be a little smaller than I'd like. It's about 2 1/2" right?
I know that's not a small blade and will most likely do whatever I need it to, but I like a little larger blade.

So now it my choice is between the regular sodbuster and a trapper. No chestnut bone scales, but the yellow is classic and fine with me...

So many options... :sigh:

Nothing wrong with yellow delrin :)

You might also want to check out GEC's Farm & Field range ;)

My two Case soddie jrs each have a blade 2 and 13/16 " long.
Like others, I would think a single pinchable blade would be better then a necessarily more fiddly two-blader, but you're the wildland fire-fighter.
And you're probably right to get both and see about it.

Sodbuster Jr. in Yeller CV is hard to beat.

As far as the trapper is concerned, I like the Mini Trapper a little better as it rides in the pocket a little nicer.

I own both a yellow cv trapper and a yellow cv soddie. I do love both knives and the soddie gets used quite a bit, but my trapper seems to find its way in my pocket more often than the soddie. The trapper gets my vote on this one.

Hard to go wrong with either. The trapper gives you two blades so you can each set for different things. The full sized soddie is pretty much a serious work knife and as others mentioned you can be pinch opened with gloves on. I have several trappers and a soddie junior. I carry a Case mini-trapper all the time. Like Woodrow, I find it just carries front pockets a lot easier.

You might look into the backpocket/jumbo trapper types as well.

I've been looking at carrying a larger, traditional folder lately and cant seem to decide on a sodbuster jr. or a trapper.

So like I said before, I have narrowed it down to the Sodbuster jr. or the trapper. Whichever one will be chestnut jigged bone and CV blade(s). I can see the spley blade on the trapper being really good for food prep (much like my "modified" Griptilian) and skinning game, but the sodbuster looks thinner and more pleasing to my eye.

Thanks.

If you require this knife to perform tasks, don't get the one that is more pleasing to your eye - get the one that will help you perform your required tasks.

And while you may like Chestnut bone, don't get hung up on it. Amber bone is very appealing - here it is in Case's 6375 large stockman

Canvass micarta in OD Green isn't anything to sniff at either - here is GEC's 71 Bull Nose with that cover material

Get the knife that will get your job done first and then later down the road get the one that is most pleasing to your eye.

Good luck with whatever knife you get!!!!

Oh, I know you said Sodbuster Jr so here is a picture of the Case Sodbuster Jr. next to a GEC Bull Nose for size comparison. The difference isn't much and you get the advantage of a lanyard hole for a lanyard or bail - both a + with the GEC.

The thought crossed my mind that maybe you should consider a big #75 stockman. You might be able to pinch the sheepsfoot blade open and a three bladed stockman is hard to beat for a all around working knife.

Thanks a lot guys; now I'm going to have to buy not just 2, but a whole mess of knives... That should make the wife real happy.

That's the problem with hanging around here, Hunter! When I first discovered this forum, my "knife ambitions" were fairly modest; now I have a long "wish list" that grows almost every day. On the other hand, although my bank account may be shrinking, my knowledge is always growing from being here, so I guess it's a "wash", right? :D

I must say though, if I had to choose only one knife that I was to have for the rest of my life, it would be a Buck 110. You just can't beat that thing for strength, reliability and durability. I know that wasn't a knife you were asking about, but it is the workhorse of all folders IMHO.

its also handy if your on a ship and need an anchor :)
or if you ever need to bludgeon an animal or attacker to death

:D ;)

Do you think a large stockman would fit in a sheath made for a trapper? I know they are of similar length, but how much wider is the stockman than a trapper?
The reason I'm asking is because I can find plenty of sheaths for a trapper, but very few for the large stockman.

If I had to guess, I would say it would fit pretty well. I don't own a large stockman though so a guess is all I have to offer. Maybe somebody here with both knives would be able to give you a more accurate response

I had a 6275 Moose that I carried sometimes in my Trapper sheath. It fit just fine. The sheepsfoot on the Stockman might make it fit a little tighter at first but I bet it would stretch pretty quick.

Thanks again for all of the advice/suggestions. I would say thanks for the help, but the "help" might be help in that I'm probably going to buy 3 knives now instead of 1...
I think my plan is to keep a lookout for a large stockman and a trapper that stikes my fancy and is a good price. Heck, I'll probably end up with a sodbuster and a jr as well.

having carried both, i ended up sending my trapper to a fellow that seemed to enjoy it
sodbuster isnt going anywhere

just my 2 cents.

That's the rub. You have to spend some time actually carrying various patterns to find just the right thing for you. If you're lucky you eventually find that one pattern and single knife you keep coming back to. Someday.
