For your line,of work, and the use you're likely to put it through, a Case CV Soddie in yellow Delrin is the knife for you. Nothing in the forgoing sentence is meant to discourage you from buying three knives, though. Tools of the trade come tax time, too.

A quick update:

I have been searching that big auction site for knives and found a good deal on a new, older model (2001) large stockman w/ the classic handles and CV blades.
I also found a fellow Texan on there who makes nice sheaths and picked one of those up too.

I have only had the knife one day, but it seems very nice. I am still looking for a good deal on a trapper and sodbuster; and will mosy likely pick one of eack of them up as well.

For many of the things you mentioned in your first post that you would be doing with this knife, I'd say the sheepfoot blade on the stockman would be the best choice. Go with the CV stockman in amber bone.

The large Stockman is likely the only knife you will ever need. If it's not to much trouble post a picture of your new knife and sheath. I'm sure I am not the only one who woul like to see them.

Congrats! Welcome to the illness, where you set out looking for one knife and end up with three:D It's all down hill from here bro!

Ok, here are a few pictures. It's about as good as I can do with my phone.

I noticed as I was taking the pictures that I have already scratched the sheath. Must have been when the boy and I were exploring some large granite boulders yesterday...

If choosing between trapper or sodbuster, my personal choice would be the trapper. I have a yellow delrin Sodbuster Jr. cv Case, and it's the one knife out of all that I have that I truly dislike. I found the big bellied rounded blade virtually useless for most anything I ever do with a knife. On the other hand, the trapper has two really useful blades, feels better in my hand, and in my opinion (ya'll know how that goes!) the trappers are just made better and are more heavy duty than the sodbuster jr. I wanted so badly to like the sodbuster, since they're looked on so favorably here, but I carried the thing for a few months and just grew to dislike it enough that it's in the original box in my gun junk drawer collecting dust. Just my personal feelings based on my experiences, add it to everybody elses experiences and somewhere therein lies an answer. To what I am not sure!

Hi hungry hunter,

I just left you a note on your visitor page. Couldn't figure out the PM thing. Let me know if you're interested.

I say Trapper. Much more aesthetic. I like the full middle liner and the way the blades sort of cross each other when they are both opened. Good first pick with the stockman though.

I gave away the Sodbuster Jr. and GEC Bullnose I had as single blade slippies do nothing for me. The Sodbuster I bought within the last year had horrendous fit and finish. Gap the entire length of one liner. Both liners proud for the length of slabs backsides. Back spring flush when open but indented above pivot pin when closed. Center pin proud on both sides. Opening was gritty and tough. Blade not even close to center. At least lock up was tight with no blade play.

I also gave away my trapper and its belt sheath. Bought the sheath because I found the trapper just too big for pocket carry. While the sheath was a fine one, I found it's design just took up too much belt space to carry such a light item.

This pic is from the lady in Idaho who now owns them.

I do own a yellow delrin CV Trapper but it's one we bought my now dead father in-law. Can't give it away. If I were to buy a Trapper, I'd buy this one again.

Hey that's a great looking sheath you bought hh. I'm sure it and your stockman will give you years of service.

Well, I guess I've gone and jumped in with both feet because I ordered a trapper yesterday...

I plan on carrying splitting csrry time between the two for a couple of months to see which one I like best.
I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again for everyone's insights and suggestions.

Agreed. I'm also not much of a fan of the stubby blades on soddies.

Well you've got the stockman that'll do anything you could ask of it. The thing about stockmen is they make you feel dumb for carrying other knives. Maybe you could just stop there? I always feel a little bad watching another one slide into the pit. Just kidding. Enjoy the ride.
