SODBUSTERS... bust 'em out, work 'em hard and show 'em off

Today I received my small Otter sod buster :).
Only two and a half weeks this time to get to Canada

Overall I like it a lot :)

The thick wooden handles are super comfortable and have this feeling of "warmth" when you hold the knife.
I would have polished the handles a bit more myself but I can easily remedy that ( one day maybe :) ) as I have a the Beall wood polishing system that I use in my wood turnings.

No gaps on the back ( I did feel a very tiny bit of metal shards from the liners but a couple of passes on my pants got rid of them).

Blade is centered, tip not proud, and with no play at all when opened either up and down or side to side.

The wood on the left under side has been rounded noticeable more than on the right side, hard to see in the pic.
A little bit of sanding would easily even both sides out ... but still ;).
There is enough buffing compound and stuff inside that the knife will need to be cleaned, flushed and oiled.

I am very happy with the size and the overall feel of the knife

The ONLY thing that I bugs me just a little :D is the soft pull.
If my Victorinox Tinker is a 5 my Otter is a 4, my Case Chestnut bone is a 6 and my yellow delrin is a 7.

I like stronger pulls for sure.
Now this may be a good thing too as my kids and my wife do not struggle to open it as they seem to do with other knives with harder pulls.

When "action" is concerned the chestnut bone is the big winner, very satisfying pull and crisp snap  ( the yellow delrin is harder but sluggish)

So here is my little collection folks :)
The Otter is just a tiny bit bigger ( appears much more because of perspective )

Next will probably be the Masserin Plow.
I think it could be the ultimate camping knife ( not so much for edc though) as it is a it is a little bigger, D2 steel and looks rock solid and has a lanyard hole
I will have to wait until the border opens again and I can cross to my PO Box in the states for that one.

Cheers :)
You have a very nice selection of the Sodbuster pattern my friend . The appearance of the Jigged Bone Case is outstanding . I see that you are contemplating getting a Maserin Plow . I can attest that it is a very comfortable knife to use , but I have only had one for 9 months and I am 80 , so I am not a Hard User anymore , so I do not know if they are a Rugged Knife . I have a micarta but I much prefer the appearance of the Mexican Bocote . In the U.K. and other countries they make one that looks like the Plow and call it Scout . Mine has the Lanyard hole and I really like that feature . It is too bad that you can not get one shipped to you in Canada my friend . I wish you luck on eventually getting one if that is what you want to do . Oh Yes , your new Messer looks like it is a nice knife . I like the Steel Liners . Stay safe up there my friend .

Nice photos and great write up, it’s so nice to get information like that ahead of a potential purchase. Thanks for the post!

Welcome mi amigo :)

Thank you Harry !
I appreciate your perspective and info on the Masserin plow  They still have an Olive wood one that looks amazing !
I am really liking my new little Otter and the steel liners are very cool
There is something very special about this type of "simpler", so called peasant knives that I really like.
Cheers my friend :)

You're welcome, my work here is done.

You did very well my friend, very well

Very nice Jiki
Especially the older one that belonged to your father as you've shared in another thread
Best !

Well, the saga of sod buster mix ups continues lol
First my case chestnut bone came with stainless steel instead of cv which I really liked actually

Now I realized that my little Otter was supposed to be in grenadille wood and it did have a lanyard hole.
Pic from dealer where I bought it from:

Mine is the Smoked Oak model with no lanyard hole ... oh well ... I really like the oak wood I must say, especially now that I oiled it. I still wrote the dealer to inform them of their error.

So for those of you considering one keep in mind that they are offered in at least 3 different woods, with and without lanyard hole on both the large and small one.

Next, I am going to give a mirror polished edge at 15 degrees and I should be set to enjoy it for a long time to come :)

Drill your own lanyard hole in it. Don't forget to open the blade first. Use the vendors picture to get an idea where to drill it. Have faith!!!!

Myself, much prefer them without lanyard holes, it's a smaller compact version and doesn't need it:cool:

Didn't you yourself state that Grenadille wood versions are only sold within the EU?

Thanks, Will

Yes I did after I saw that notice in the Otter website.

I was intrigued and a bit perplexed by it as most US dealers advertise it as grenadille wood along with pics that correspond with that wood. A couple vendors also advertise other versions such smoke oak and birch.

So I still don't know exactly what the issue is, perhaps Otter has stopped sending them abroad but most US stores never updated their websites ?

:thumbsup:Same here regarding the lanyard holes.

Very nice ! :)

How would your rate their pull on yours ?

Mine is about a 4 I would say with a clean and crisp snap on opening that I find very satisfying. I do wish the pull was just a bit stronger for my taste however is perfect for lending to members of my family

EDIT: never mind , I just saw in your second post is a 9/10

Did you get your grenadil in the USA ? Just wondering if Otter is sending their grenadil knives overseas these days.

I got the grenadil in the US in 2018 I think.

The pull on all 3 of my small Otter hippeknieps are at about 5/10.

My small Otter has a crisp pull, a bit stronger than my Case knives. My Anker Messer has a sturdy pull that I rather like.

This is the first I've heard about grenadil exports. Is it a protected species? I bought mine about a year ago in Solingen.

I read this in the Otter official webpage

When I ordered mine the vendor had it listed as grenadil yet I received and Oak.

A few other US vendors also show them as being grenadil.( they also offer oak, birch )

I would suspect they are still available in the US however I would call first to ensure prior to ordering.
