Being the type of guy who has affinities for both tactical knives and ones that will actually function well in the bush, I am really liking some of the new SOG designs.

I recently had the chance to get out and work with one of the SOG Creeds and I am really liking it. I believe it has a handle like that of the new Tech Bowie, which has the same guard and pommel as the new Bowie 2.0 but with a kraton handle rather than a leather one. The blade is 7.5 inches long, .25 inches thick, is hollow ground, and made of AUS8 steel. It has an up swept weight forward design being 1 inch wide at the narrowest point at the ricasso and 1.5 inches at the widest point. It has fullers on both sides of the blade and though it has a somewhat sharpened false edge the is more of a flat spot on the top of the spine than a lot of earlier SOG knives. The shape of the blade shows a definite "Eastern" influence.

This is what it looks like in hand.

The balance point is just forward of the guard.

I like the sheath on this knife. It will fit on a pistol belt without having to take the belt apart. As usual for SOG the rivets are beefed up with rings to keep them from pulling out over time. I like the aesthetics of the split retention strap. It wouldn't bother me any if they threw in a few rivets in the lower part of the sheath.

The knife handles very well. It made quick work of chopping a dead Dogwood tree, chopping and splitting some Black Walnut a neighbor cut down last week, and chopping cleanly through some dried bamboo. This Black TiNi has a smoother finish that is "slicker" than that of the matt black SEAL knives, I felt no drag at all while chopping.

I put together these little videos. I'm more used to being behind a camera than in front of one but the knife handled itself well anyway.

Being used to SOG's knives coming out of the box extremely sharp, I waited till after some chopping to show the edge.It did great at whittling, and still easily shaves.

I usually don't personally care much for fullers in knives but the size and location of these do afford a more positive grip when holding the blade in a pinch grip doing more detailed types of work with the tip.

Yes it is.

Thanks for pointing that out...I thought I put that in the specs. I'll edit it in.

great write up mistwalker and great pics. ive always had a soft spot for SOG...i really like the looks of that knife...i could go without the rear guard...but it doesnt bother me that much....looks like a stout 1/4" thickness of AUS-8 goodness. im starting to get the itch for it now!

Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed the write-up, I sure enjoyed putting it together.

Well, with it being somewhat of a departure from my "usual" knives I did at first have a few mixed feelings. However handling it and actually using it dispelled the uncertainties. The knife really does handle and perform very well. Its size and weight belies its it's ability to chop, I have handled a few larger knives in the last year or so that didn't chop as well in my opinion. And although it is a weight forward design the balance point isn't so far forward that it effects the flow of the knife in the hand. Also I love the "grippiness" of the handle. It's easy to hold onto but doesn't hurt a bare hand. I think the broad sweep will also be great for dressing out large game...I hope to get to try that out soon.

Great review buddy, I really like the shape of that blade !

Any idea what the tangs are like ?

You may have mentioned it and I missed it....sorry if I did. Is this one of there's that is being made in Taiwan? Thanks

Thanks bro, yeah I'm liking it more and more.

Only that they will apparently take a beating pretty well :)
I have tried to find, and asked for schematic in the past with no success. All I have to go on it what they will take...which is a good bit. I've yet to have one fail, but I don't do destruction tests...just every day abuse :D

If it was in a carbon steel, I would get it, for sure. I don't prefer stainless in a knife that is 1/4 thick. Great write up

Yeah, this one is made in Taiwan. I think only a few of their fixed blades are U.S. made.

I have felt that way before too, and still do about some steels... but after the Team Leader Survivor I am really impressed with AUS8 and SOG's process of making knives with it.

I had been eyeing the creed for a few months before they came out, but opted for a rc5 instead, from the video I do like the way it handles.

I will take a wild guess and say that the SOG Company borrowed the "Creed" design from KIFFE/Japan:

A little history:

Another knife made in Japan for Kiffe is also said to have seen Vietnam service, and is sometimes called the Marine Force Recon as it is a fair copy of that very collectible SOG knife. Almost certainly a commercial copy, it may have been sold in "surplus" stores in the 1960s, but I doubt that it was actually officially carried by Force Recon personnel. - Taken from Gary Cuningham's Bayonet Notes, December 2003.

I can definitely see the resemblance...looks like they stretched it a little.

Nice review, Mistwalker:thumbup: I really like the design, but I really wish they'd omitted the groove in the blade. IMHO, it's an unnecessary distraction from an otherwise sleek-looking blade. Of course, if they put out a version with a leather handle, I may just go ahead and overlook that little flaw;)

Neat video Brian, the first log you chopped is the same way I chop small logs too, it really works like a charm when you do it that way.
I like the split retention strap, I might have to try one like that. do you think it would work for a Warthorn or 1-0?

I am not sure about the blade shape just yet. It might have to grow on me some lol. I will keep looking at the pics you posted:D

Take care,

Bryan

I wanted one of these after seeing a review on Youtube. I want one more after seeing it preform. From what I've read on this knife the stainless preforms well. Going back to that other thread recently contrasting the two (carbon vs stainless). What is a "Blood grove" designed for anyway?

SOG should have their AUS8 down pat, they have been using it for 20+ years.I have one of their fixed blade Tridents w/micarta handles that I bought new in 87 or 88,It's a good knife. That Creed looks like a keeper.Nice write up,thanks mist!
