How can you tell it's fake?

Members usually identify the differences between the real knife and the one that is counterfeit as a courtesy to the community.
I fear that my early comment about the lines may have been the springboard for the "Too easy" consensus shortly thereafter, but I was swiftly proven wrong, and would like to see if there is anything to back up the veracity of the continued claim.

It was posted on Reddit. Said it happened closing, just heard a ting and there it was. No abuse or damage noticed before that
If that's true , and it's not a fake ...that's certainly a very poor showing for this kind of hard use folder ! :(:thumbsdown:

I've used mine pretty hard and it has held up great. That flipper tab is connected to the tang by such a thin piece of steel though, any defect in that thin section or a hard hit on the flipper tab could result in a break.

I watched a video a while back , where the guy baton pounded on the spine of his Cold Steel Colossus until he broke off the wave/ thumb plate .

I did not fault the knife . Thumb plate was not really designed for this treatment .

Hard to sort out the truth of what might have caused this SOG damage .

The only SOGs I've been crazy about lately has been their older stuff from Seki Japan.
Bought a few old SEAL Pups and a folder or two from Seki a year or ago and they're great.
I'm not so sure about a lot of their stuff from like maybe ~2003? and later, or whenever they stopped the majority
of their production in Japan.

The older model Trident folders from Taiwan or China or whatever get me for some reason.
On the one hand they kind of feel like cheap plastic, and parts from the handle, up to and including the handle itself,
can break, warp, bend etc. if you're not careful.
On the other hand the Trident offers a decent size blade and is very lightweight, carries light and disappears in pocket.
The AUS8 blade steel isn't a bad choice and I believe it's cryo treated which seems to help some.
There's sentimental value for me because I carried a Trident folder most of my time in Scouts.
That knife cut lots of strings, made lots of Ramen noodles, and was fun to open and close around a campfire.
Really fine clip point with lots of belly comes in handy for EDC way more than you might think.

I've broken a handful of SOGs doing what seemed like routine things for a folder, bowie, machete, etc.
Their economic "Fusion" line was terrible.
The vast majority of SOG products have been real hit and miss for me over the years.
I think they really nail the aesthetics, I like the look of most of their stuff, but the execution and build quality are often lacking IMO

I am not aware of the Seal XR model specifically being counterfeited, so far anyway.

In 2006 SOG terminated their contracts with Hattori for the S1/S2 (since 1986) and Kinryu (all other fixed blades) and switched to Taiwan production. During the 2005-2006 period there were some models, like the Seal Pup that still had "Seki Japan" on them and some already had "Taiwan". SOG kept their folding knives contract with G.Sakai until just a couple of years ago for their Arc-Lock VG10 models. Not sure if they even have any now in their lineup. After that SOG lost alot of fans, and they introduced a lot of what many categorized as "crap". Only in the last few years did SOG seem to revise their products to become better and more competitive, better designs and steels, more US production. However with the buyout by GSM the future is still a bit up in the air.

Please try to read my original post again. I know it's hard for you, but give it another shot.🤨

Oh, like the comma splice there too, pal. Nice one. 4 words and a comma splice sharper than any knife you got! 🤣

Should someone who uses three exclamation points in a row (twice) in the subject line of their topic be offering comma critique to someone else?

Asking for a friend.

The SOG Seal XR is for real!!! This thing is incredible. I'm amazed that SOG has done a folding knife this well, and that's not something I've seen from SOG in a very, very long time. This knife locks like a vault, flips just like a champ, perfect centering, S35VN steel is as sharp as a razor, and there is zero blade play!!! One of the big issues I had with SOG folders was that they always had blade play...not this puppy! It is rock solid! This is quite a surprise from SOG. So, this begs the question: has the SOG Seal XR dethroned the Cold Steel AD10 as the best knife money can buy? I can't go that far, I'm sorry, but the Cold Steel AD10 remains the champ! Still, there is a lot to like about the SOG Seal XR and I see no cons with this knife. The only issue I could see with this knife is that because there is jimping literally all over the knife, this could get hard on the hands with extended use.

If the SOG Seal XR is any indication of where SOG is going with their folding knives, then they are definitely going in the right direction!

So no longer AD-10 is The World The Best The Knife Ever ???
New God every week :^D

I have had the seal xr since before it was released to the public, sog sent it to me directly. Some noob who just got the knife (by his own admission) claiming to be able to identify a fake one "too easy bro, come at me harder next time!!!" Is comical. Dude is a modern day jester.

In all likelihood I am the first person on bladeforums to have one.

What’s with the acrimony toward the OP and his position in this knife? For that matter what’s wrong with the SOG Seal XR? Does it suck that bad?

Perhaps I’m missing something but this is ridiculous. Disagreement is fine but this is childish behavior

One picture of a broken thumb stud proves little other than it broke. Is it possible the user abused the knife or pushed it beyond its intended purpose?

This thread needs to be redirected into some form of a meaningful exchange
