SOG Tactical TomaHawk ?

Received one of these today,

has anyone seen or bought a kydex drop through sheath yet ?.

I am having a custom kydex sheath made since I couldn't find anything suitable for it. I agree that the factory sheath needs serious attention. If there is interest, I could see about getting a group rate from the guy who is making my sheath. He's only charging $40 already.

But, what about the 420 steel. Isn't that a concern? It's why I haven't bought one. That's why I bought Cold Steel hawks instead.

Nup, not for me..............

As it stands here in Australia its hard enough to even touch a Tomahawk yet alone OWN one.

So the steel dosen't really bother me, plus for the $$$$ phfffffffffffttttt.

RossA: i was looking at the SOG sheath today thinking that if you had the skills (or someone you know has) there are two(2) options for modding.

(1) remove the press studs and install retention straps that are similar to those types seen on the K5/ RMJ sheath system.

or

(2) remove press studs and stitch up the bottom of the sheath but leave a hole for the handle, then slice open the top and tidy up the edges and instal straps.

At this point i'm not sure if i'll do it because i don't want to F**k it up, hough do SOG sell spare sheaths ?????????.

As far as 420, it wouldn't be my first choice of steel, but so far it seems ok. I like the idea of some stainless because where I live it's so hot and humid, and rust prevention is important to me, especially if you are actually going to take a tool into the field and use it in damp conditions.
I'm not sure if SOG sells separate sheaths, but I agree that sewing up the bottom so that the hawk is sheathed from the top down rather than from the bottom up is a much better way to go.

If you want a one piece for deployment, look at Ranger Knives RD HAWK. Dont go cheap if its your life. Same price will also get you a VTAC. for 90 bucks you can also get a Rogers Ranger from Fort Turner

that's good advice IMHO, brother smash'.

Like in Australia we here in Malaysia cannot import one. I though finally (after mucho long last!) managed to 'smuggle' mine and now it's resting on my lap :)

I like the weight and the handle on this hawk. Though this is my fist hawk which means I have none other to compare it to I can say I'm happy with it. There is 3 kinds of grip that is usable I feel, the 'choking' hold which gives good close contact impact while punching, the middle grip which is easier to manipulate and lastly the traditional hold (hand on far end of handle) which provides most power.

Interesting story, I asked the seller to dismantle the hawk (as part of my fiendish elaborate smuggling scheme :)) which means I had to assemble it here in my country. While whacking the head into the handle the head of the hawk slipped and stabbed into my left hand. For the first time in my life I saw little fountains of blood coming out of the back of my left hand. Didn't hurt funnily enough.

5 hrs later and after a minor surgery on my left hand the doc says I missed my nerves and missed bones so I'm mega lucky. 2 days in ward later I returned to my private office (which had dried pools of blood on the floor like in a horror movie) and proceeded to clean up my floor with my one good hand. After finishing I stubbornly assembled my hawk (after cleaning the blood off it) in a iron smelling (blood smelled like iron) office room.

After a few days of one handed playing with my hawk I love it very much. Interesting to note that the edge of the hawk bent from falling onto the floor. I ground away the bent end and it's good as new.

I love my hawk despite all the trouble it brought. Next I'm figuring out how to get myself either a ATC Lagana, Nemesis Detal or L-Max or lastly a Strider CR. I'm running out of digits to dismember though :)

Not sure how to mod it. If anything the handle needs to be more rough cause right now it's smooth and smooth-handles=accidents :)

Yeah definately the handles is in my list. I've modded stuff before but never a hawk (since this is my first one) so it'll be trail or error. Must remember to wear safety gloves, the last bill (for the medical) hurts me helluva lot more than the wound did :)

Hey guys, any idea if the ATC Lagana Vietnam hawk can be disassembled or not???

I would check with Fehrman knives to see if they can ship with handle off.

You cant go wrong with the VTAC[/quote]

Bit pricey, EBay is selling them for 100 bucks. However anyone can tell me how is the head of the VTAC attached to the handle? Torx maybe bolts?

I know the Nemesis DETA or L-Max can be dismantled but at the price it's selling I'll need to save up before I can think of them. However next on my list is definately the VTAC.

Great vids on the Fehrman website :)

I see that Fehrman sells their sheath for $25 separately. I migh need to check out the dimensions and see if it will fit the SOG hawk.

ATC VTAC is the best tactical hawk out there man. and I seriosuly doubt that they are going to ship it dismantled. (that would sacrafice the hawks reliability as far as the strength of the shaft being tied to the head.

Regarding the handle, i installed rubber O'rings in the spaces for grip, works a treat.

I was thinking of paracord wrapping (since it does not damage the handle) but your idea makes sense, thanks

I'll be getting some different sizes and thickness o-rings to try out. Would look like the Emerson CQC-T Hawk for a fraction of the price :)

I used size 19 on the upper end of the handle and size 20 on the first 6 rows or so (i think).

The tighter the better.

I'll buy many to keep as spares since my local store (3rd world country style) does not have it in sizes but large buckets which are without any mention of size. Trail and error and this time with the sheath fixed on until I get it right. Can't wait to try it out next week.

I'm in discussions with a seller in ebay who is trying to disassemble a VTAC for me. I'll try figuring out how to assemble it here when the time comes. But I gotta ask you guys, is the VTAC much better then the SOG? I'm asking cause I wanna build up excitement you see :)

How's a Nemesis DETA or L-Max in terms of handling? It looks space age so I don't know what to expect but it looks easily disassembled and assembled so I'm considering it. Only problem is the damn price and the lack of reviews in the net...
