It's my birthday next wendsday and my ma wanted to buy me a gift so I decided to finally add a sog to my line up ( I have one knife from every company)

I was between a kerhsaw jyd composite but I managed to find a sog mini Vulcan tanto for $70 which is awesome

Anyway I just wanted to see what you guys think since I respect your opinions

good choice. SOG makes innovative and unique knives. May not be the best materials but hey I don't see Spyderco or Kershaw making knives like SOGs.

I have not bought a SOG yet which is because I do not like most of the blade shapes on a lot of their folders. The only knife that they sell that I may be interested in is the newest incarnation of the Tomcat.

Spyderco is my first choice of course.

Spyderco makes a knife just like SOG:

A coworker has the aegis, and I actually don't think it's all that bad. The only complaint is that the assisted mechanism has a bit too much resistance towards the end of closing the blade.

Otherwise, the flat ground blade is very nice, the lockup is good/nice mechanism, and the handles seem to be nice quality for FRN/Zytel or whatever it is.

Certainly it doesn't appear to be nearly as bad as people make SOG out to be. Actually a nice knife IMO.

i have used the sog spec elite & pentagon in vg10 for a year & find the edge holding to be good. both feature the arclock which is the easiest ambidexterous openers i've tried yet. i ca'nt comment on their aus8 but if it's close to cold steel aus8 it will be a good performer.

I liked the mini Vulcan tanto for the laminated blade as well and I heard that action is silky smooth

And please no SOG hateing I already knew about them biting off knife designs

I'm surprised more Sog haters haven't jumped on the bandwagon. I can only give you my personal observation. The quality of my Spydercos and Kershaws has not blow away that of my Sogs, despite what anyone on this forum wants to to believe. Furthermore Sog assisted opening has proven to me to be pretty reliable.

Just my 0.02

I have the mini vulcan. Overall a pretty good folder. Silky smooth opening, and a flipper. I find two major flaws with it though. 1. the price, for $70 I'd take my money and save for a while and get a spyderco military. 2. is the lock, when sog knocked off the axis lock, they didn't do such a great job. It's super easy to disengage, and mine stopped functioning after some minor flipping. But I have to hand it to sog for their service. they fixed the knife for free(i didn't even have a box or warranty card), they sent me a free sog e-clips, and they did it in a timely manner around the holidays. Overall I'd say go with a waved endura, or a griptillian. Its not a horrible knife, and all knives have their flaws. But there are way better options for the price. just my 2 pesos

I have owned several Flash II's and Tridents. They looked cool and carried nice but IMO they had way too much blade play for me.

My last purchase was my first SOG, a Digi-Camo Aegis. Overall I am quite pleased with the knife. 'Tree toping' sharp OOB, nice AO action and zero blade play in any direction. The design is excellent and the blade grind is perfect. My only gripe is that the blade centering is off. Not enough to hit the liner, but enough to present a minor annoyance for we OCD types.

Based on my experience with the Aegis, I will be adding more SOG knives to the stable. I like the designs and I like supporting a company from the Pacific North-West.

You will do much better with the Kershaw JYD composite.

My buddies and I have had way too many bad experiences with them, both knife-wise and Customer Service wise. They've never returned any emails from me, not once. Blade-play and awful edge retention on the AUS-8 were what I had dealt with.

Like others have said, your $70 would be better served else where. For the "quality" (or lack thereof) from SOG, the prices are high. Blade play galore, sub-par fit and finish and decent (at best) materials.

It's to late though knife was ordered already

The mini Vulcan tanto blade is vg10 laminated with 420jp which was a draw for me

So far though my fav folder of all time is a CS ak47 with auto lock
