SOG's Official Response

I feel sorta sick now. Maybe if your cool and original knives weren't so expensive you'd make enough money so that you didnt have to copy MULTIPLE makers designs.

The handle ergonomics of the zilla is and EXACT replica of the endura, which has been out since the '80s. This was an extremely bad move SOG, that may cost your company mucho $$$.

Lost me as a customer.

I'm too disappointed for words. It makes me sad to see an American company do such a thing. :(:thumbdn:

wow that reply by "Spencer" (our founder and Chief Designer).. apparently Spencer does not have a last name, kind of like "Prince".. "Jesus".. etc you get the picture, was an absolute kick in the face to anybody hoping for a real reply or explanation.

let me summarize .."I am trying to cover out butts and will gaurantee we will write "SOG" on the knife, that way you know it is not a counterfeit.. we hate those guys"

I am a fan of several SOG knives but damn.. this is a joke.

Hmm... Dual directional you say?

You needed a fourth thread to dogpile?

This gets right to the point so people can make their own informed decisions based on all of the pertinent information in the first post. No one's gonna wade through the endless pages of opinions in the other threads and find the facts. I find it interesting how you seem to continually try to sway people from expressing their concern for a brazen move by a once respected company. The less people talk about it, the quicker SOG gets to pretend that they haven't done anything wrong and you seem to be contented with that.

Well I, for one, appreciate this consolidated post. It's a real eye opener for me.

It would certainly be nice to hear from the purportedly injured party or parties what their opinion is. If this is a "brazen" taking of their intellectual property, I'd think they would have something to say. Maybe just not here on a public forum, though.

I find it interesting how you extrapolate from two brief, accurate comments that I am somehow protecting SOG.

Regardless of one's personal opinions, just because nobody's arguing doesn't necessarily make it dogpiling; it just seems like we're all agreeing. People are being dissappointed without being altogether vindictive, not all of us, anyhow.
Seems like we're all just questioning a questionable action.

missin_hobo, 2 of the 4 threads were started by one person, and like this thread, were meant to call SOG out for perceived copying.

The third thread was more even-handed, in it's title and in its participants' opinions mentioning the good new products as well. It was this third thread that Chris@SOG used as the place to post his answer.

Instead of continuing that thread, Kaizen1 chose to start a fourth thread like the first two, heavily emphasizing the negative and ignoring the positive.

I specifically said that you were trying to "sway people from expressing their concern." And that extrapolation wasn't a large leap at all.

Instead of continuing that thread, Kaizen1 chose to start a fourth thread like the first two, heavily emphasizing the negative and ignoring the positive.

I gave my reason for starting a separate thread, I specifically left out my opinion in the 1st post, provided the facts and the official response from SOG. How is it that I "heavily emphasized the negative and [ignored] the positive"?

Your "facts" were only the facts about the problem knives, guaranteeing that emotional responses would only look in that negative direction.

I see no reason for extracting Chris@SOG's response from a balanced thread into another negative one. You see me as trying to "sway people from expressing their concern" and I see you as trying to stir up a mob reaction.

Apologies, I wasn't aware of that. It does sound a bit trollish, but far be it for me to second-guess someone's passion for knives, especially if they feel slighted by this, like I do.

I agree with the 'percieved copying' part, and I find SOG's decision there to be highly dubious, but you make a better point about dogpiling than I thought at first. I suppose I ought to keep out of it a bit more.

Your "facts" were only the facts about the problem knives, guaranteeing that emotional responses would only look in that negative direction.

These, as far as I can tell, were the specific knives in question. What purpose would there be in putting in the models that weren't a part of the original concern? It's not like people are debating whether the other knives are copies. There no debate at all about the Aura (folder) for example. Whichever "side" people choose (if any), these would be the knives to discuss.

I see no reason for extracting Chris@SOG's response from a balanced thread into another negative one.

First, the thread you're talking about has a big ":thumbdn:" in the title. How is that "more balanced" than mine with no opinion in it the title or first post? Secondly, my first post provides ALL of the pertinent facts in the matter. Can you point out a fact that I left out that has to do with the original concern that would place SOG in a more "balanced" light?

You see me as trying to "sway people from expressing their concern" and I see you as trying to stir up a mob reaction.

There is nothing wrong with a group of people showing concern about something like this and letting SOG know that what they've done is unacceptable. You spinning this by labeling people that don't agree with SOG's decisions a "mob" is a sorry justification to maintain your position. Looks like we'll agree to disagree.

Right, the lack of response from Spyderco, etc on a public forum means nothing. Further, I'm sure SOG's legal department covered their asses just enough to avoid any legal issues. Legal or not, that doesn't change what happened.
