**SOLD** Price removed

It seems to be the custom here to remove the price once a knife is sold and overwrite it with "sold". Why not leave the price that the knife was listed and sold for and then add the "sold" part to the edit? It lets everyone know what price they may have to pay for a knife or what the market will bear if they decide to sell a knife. On many forums this is written into the rules of the road for sellers. For example, on ar15.com you will have your selling privileges revoked if you remove the price upon selling.

A knife sale is between the buyer and the seller. If the seller wants it to be private, I see no reason to question them.

I've had times where I've sold a knife because of financial difficulty. I removed the prices from the thread because I didn't think they were anyone else's business.

That said, I can understand the merit of having sold prices listed, it certainly can help people research the value of a knife.

I tend to remove any of my prices that aren't standard prices; I.E selling it to a friend or because of a bad financial situation.

I know in the watch world some people do it. But it's extremely annoying. It's helpful for me to get the "going rate" of a used knife or watch so I can know to hold out for another used or if it's just like a $10 I'd rather just buy it from a dealer right now.

I never delete my prices. When I saw people do it here I thought it was bizarre. I've never seen it done elsewhere.

My best guess is that it's a bargaining tactic. If I offer Knife X to you for 100, and you private message me a counter-offer for 70, then I give another counter offer to you for 80 and we agree, I still sell it for more than it was worth to me (always true or you'd never sell Knife X) and you get a good deal. But if I sell a second Knife X and the new shoppers can see that I was willing to settle for 80 last time, they'll immediately start their offering at 80, whereas if the actual going price were secret, they may instead try to bargain for 90 or even the full 100.

It kinda bugs me when I'm checking out the for sale forums and I see one I'm interested in sold but I don't know how much it went for.

That is all well and good, but perhaps just leave all posted prices and subsequent reductions in the post.

Wrong forum for discussing this and there's already a very recent thread on this exact topic in the correct one (GB&U).

Well, don't get me wrong, I would much prefer it that way than the stupid SOLD thing.

And why is this in feedback? Please move it back to the general area.

Here is the official word, as of the updated Exchange rules posted this past week. This has always been our policy. Buyers usually want the prices left up as a reference. Sellers often prefer them deleted so they won't be held to a lower price than they are asking.

3.1.15 You are not required to edit out, or leave in place, the original or final selling price. That is your prerogative.

I moved this to FEEDBACK. The General Knife Discussion is for discussing knives and their attributes.
FEEDBACK is for discussing deals, dealers, and policy on buying, trading, and selling.

I've taken them down because I got tired of people emailing me 2 years later. And honestly, I never researched or worried about what someone else sold a knife for.

It is posted on a public forum, for everyone to see. Seller and buyer both are benefiting from publicity, hence the "private" doesn't apply at any rate.

This isn't about questioning, but reference prices. I am very sure, nobody is interested what was going on between the seller and buyer in private.

I'm not sure I understand the above, how can the seller be held to any price after the sale was completed? As in if he sells more than one item of the same kind?

Are you going to move this one too?:

Noticing this thread in general pointed me to post this thread there as well.

Can you guess why I didn't move that thread?

1) It hadn't been there long and I hadn't noticed it.

2) Surprise! Sees all, knows all is someone else, not me. I do rely on people Reporting Posts that might need attention.

3) Typically, asking me about it in another thread, like this one, that I might not continue reading once I did what the thread itself needed is not Reporting the Post. Hit the little triangle next to the post count # and tell us what's wrong. THAT report goes to all the mods involved for a better chance of action.

4) I moved that thread just before answering this here. :)
