Never seen this before. I was curious as to what causes it?

I don't know what kind of wood that is and if that coloring is common for that kind of wood. Most colors in wood though is caused by a fungus. The fungus can be the trees reaction to insect damage or infection. Burled or spalted wood is usually the result of a fungus. Looks cool though. Make something out of it!

Go... go... go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go.. go..!

Red cedar will often have the purple/red coloring mixed with creamy colored areas like that. Scrape it and smell it, you'll know if it's cedar or not.

There was a tree that broke and fell, leaving about 3 - 4 feet left. It had seasoned and lightly rotted in places. I broke off the colored part, which was on the outside part that was more exposed and damaged with no bark covering it. Not sure what kind of tree it was. North eastern Ohio. Doesn't have a distinct smell to it so I doubt it's cedar.

Although the grain looks much like Cedar, a sample of the bark or foliage would go a long way in helping identifying it.

I'll go back there tomorrow and see if I can get a few photos from where I found it.

Looks just like purpleheart ! But if it grew in OH it must be something else.

my best guess would be cedar, based on the color. but you said it doesn't have a smell so i don't have any other ideas...
