Hey Folks,
Seems like I've been working on this shop for years.... I HAVE! Lately I feel like more of a carpenter/plumber/electrician than a knifemaker.:grumpy: It is still a ways from being finished but I can work... so that is HUGE:thumbup:

The building is a 24' x 24', 2-story. The foundation is into the side of a hill and the second level is accessible from behind at grade. I will only show you the bottom "shop" portion. The upper level is destined to be a rental apartment with a loft. Here it is from the outside. I apologize for the fuzzy pics. I didn't have access to the good camera today so I'm using my Surface Pro, low-rez.

Outside. The little sign-on-a-rope is a deterrent for people(mainly my kids) from bursting in and scaring the crap out of me.

Here is the basic layout as a reference for the next series of fuzzy pics.

As you walk through the double doors you are in the forging area.

Turn to the left and you see my leather bench, hand sanding/fittings station and floating island bench(that is a fancy way of saying it isn't anchored down).

Beyond the forge is the grinding/buffing area. Various grinders and sanders... all with dust management systems.

I just put in the partition walls to house my washroom and utility/storage closet.

Here is the closet, just behind the grinders. Complete with laundry tub. My in floor radiant heat system will be controlled from here as well.

Here is the newest addition... A BATHROOM! YESSSSSSS. Now, folks can poop in my shop!

It is a Unisex facility

complete with a Wildertools custom TP holder.

Behind the leather bench is a man door that is to be the main entrance for visitors(once the signage is up) It kinda contains them from walking into the danger zone and from being in arm's reach of bench tools. The whole shop is wheelchair accessible, as I plan to hold workshops and teach. Sorry for the stack of drywall/sheetrock.

That's about it for now. I plan to do a video tour to outline my insipid machinery and tooling.
Thanks for looking.

Rick

Looks great. Plenty of room and storage, also nice lighting(windows) at workbench area.
Thanks for sharing pics,
Jeff

Very nice Rick.. Jealous of all the room you have.. Now that I finally have materials to actually make knives, I'm finding I'm short on room to store it.

Does the rental come with ear plugs?

Shop looks great

I missed this the first time.. I need one of these for my wife. She is notorious for walking up right behind me because she doesn't get my attention loud enough from afar. Thankfully neither of us has gotten hurt yet just a few choice words when my heart has jumped out of my throat.

My wife has nearly gotten stabbed on a few occasions... I hear you, bud.

Hmm is that a fencing outfit i spy?
Worse... SCA heavy combat armour.

Nice shop, Rick.

I would rather see crappy photos of a nice shop than nice photos of a crappy shop.

One simple way to stop being surprised by a visitor is to put a motion detector inside at the door. When someone walks in the chime goes off and/or a light turns on. You can put the indicator devices where you will see/hear them and be gently advised that someone just came in. A cheap rotating light can be put in a socket on the ceiling and hooked up to the detector fairly easily.

Here is a cheap rotating light:

Better than new pictures of your crappy shop, right? ;) Someone beat me to it but I was got to ask if you had some kind of subsidized deal with the local branch of the Ontario Association For the Hearing Impaired to rent out that apartment? Either that or you could rent it out to a local death metal band for practice space. :D

Awesome shop there. Be very thankful, all I have is a 6 x 10 utility trailer to store tools in and that's it. I built an outdoor workbench to set stuff on lol.

Killer, man! Congrats. That in-floor heating is such a good idea for a knife shop. Also, I freak the $&%* out too when I'm surprised while grinding.
