Some dude forging a blade (videos)

FWIW Nick, your links are broken because you have a comma instead of a dot before the com...

In my defense, I did copy/paste the links I got from him. I should have known he was just finding a way to make me look more stupider ;) :p

LOL. He needs to quit choking that hammer! Choke up is a common sign of too heavy of a hammer, more efficient work could be done with a lighter head weight and with his hand down on the proper part of the handle. He's killing his arm!

I downloaded the first and watched it but the last two only allow me to DL 65 percent? I'll try again in a bit.

One thing I learned is that instead of pounding the heck out of the steel he uses a bit more finesse and has a plan. At first I thought he was making a huge curve inb the blade but it turned out that he did that because he knew how to move the steel. This is where I would have to really pay attention and learn from pros.

I don't know about the choking up... I hold the hammers by the very end when I'm roughing in... but I choke up a lot for the fine stuff.

I did also want to point out that he doesn't sound like Darth Vader in real life ;) :p :D

Some other things.

This fella is a good friend of mine and a VERY GOOD guy.

While I poked at him a bit on little "mechanics" things... There is no arguing that the blade he ends up with is VERY WELL DONE!!!

I have seen a lot of guys forge blades and not get them anywhere near that close to shape.

Add to this that he's pretty much self-taught... and I think he did a kick ass job.

Derrick is just too cool... I've already downloaded those vids for future viewing.
He's got a workshop to die for, and certainly qualifies as one of the most giving members of the knifemaking community!

...good to see the shop is still pretty clean too, D!:D

Wulf pretty much defines the term "one of the good guys" - and he did a fine job forging out this hunter. One of the things that this video demonstrates well (to those that have not done it before) is how little time you have to move steel between re-heats. I found this to be pretty strong motivation toward efficient use of the hammer

Choking up on the handle is something I was strongly icnlined towards, but Dan (Farr) tried to beat it out of me (not literally) by pointing out how much easier it was to move metal when using a longer lever. I didn't have to swing any harder to hit quite a bit harder. I can still hear him saying "Let the hammer to the work." And also "Stop hitting the ricasso!" :o

I remember as a kid learning to use hammers .The comment when I choked was - if they wanted you to use a 6" handle they would have given you one !! In one section of the video the anvil seemed to move ,or was that the camera that moved ??

Derrick's workshop is just that much cooler than it was for the ABS hammer in now though Matt since I sold him a swage block ! =P (I had 2 nice ones, but they had basically the same shapes)

Too bad the guy forging the blade is a pickle smoocher. :D

Just kidding; Derrick is a good dude and a close friend of mine. :)
