Some dude forging a blade (videos)

Does he have any hair left on his knuckles....?(ouch..!)
Great videos....enjoyable and informative.
Thanks...!

I made these video clips for family, friends and coworkers who are always asking me what it is that I do out there in my workshop. I asked Nick to watch them and critique my technique, and he was kind enough to give me a few really good pointers, as well as some words of encouragement.

By the way, that's an 8# hammer I'm choking up on. There's a trade-off between power and control, so when I really want to move some metal without swinging wildly and possibly missing my mark, I grab the 8 pounder and "place" it exactly where I want it. Seems to work for me but as with everything I do, I'm sure there are better ways.

And thanks for the kind words guys - they're encouraging to hear.

And here's a shot of the rough forged blade, as yet untouched by the grinder...

Great work Derrick! I really liked the videos, I also read and liked the story of your JS test, very cool thanks for sharing.

thanks for sharing those Nick...

What I liked most about the vids was there was no music playing in the background , so it allowed us to hear the tone of the metal changes as it cooled.

One thing I gotta do on this knifemaking journey is forge a blade... but I know once I do I am gonna wanna do more. Just wish I could find someone near me that would be willing to let me watch them forge a blade.

Well John, if you ever get up this way again you know you are more than welcome to come hammer on steel here.

The funny thing about forging, is there are still so many people that try to draw this definitive line between "stock removal" and "heat and beat" when in all reality it's just another method to come up with a knife... which is something WE ALL LOVE to do.

It's all fun! :D

well said Nick , ok maybe I just wanna beat the heck out of some steel then ;)

I just spent the last hour reading everything on Wulf's website... I really dig his work and his sense of humor !! The beer in the boot was flippin genius...and the bit about the kid hopping to school had me in tears.

This Dude is not so anonymous is he?? Anyway, I have looked at his work and from what I gather, his skills are quite sweet!!

I still cannot watch the last two though??? Dang. Oh, I missed when Wulf introduced himself here. Nice work man, I appreciate it when anyone takes there time to teach people things (and not charge them) I hope to see more video if you have the time. Impressive skills Wulf.

Nick,

Thanks for sharing the video from Dick's Work Shop.

The forged piece will certainly not need much grinding to be at its finished profile. Great job Derrick

Once again thanks for sharing :D

Really good stuff Wulf  I have to agree with everyone who complimented your work. You do an excellent job, forging much closer to finish shape than I'm able to at this point in time. Day-yum..... you use big hammers ;) ...... from start to finish. May be the reason your forearms are as big as Nicks eh ? :D Kudo's on everything, even the credits at the end were a gas  Thanks Dick.

Thanks again fellas. I really do appreciate everyone's words of encouragement. The anonymity thing was just me being too embarrassed to post these clips here. And frankly, I also try to avoid using my real name on my website because I want to keep my "other" life out of this life. Bladesmithing is my escape and I don't want that other world to intrude upon it.
