First off I'd just like to say hi to everyone. I've been lurking around the site for a few days now and have desided to ask some questions. I am thinking about going into business selling knives as a part time job. At this time I am on a medical leave from work and would be able to put alot of time into finding out what people look for when buying knives online and thus getting things started.

I know alot of people are doing this right now, but what i want to know is what makes someone buy knives from one guy over another. I have bought a few knives in my time though most have been impulse buys. I see one online that i like and want it right then. So I drive all over town looking for it, only to find that the price is alot more then it was online, or that i can only get it online. Leaving me short on cash or having to wait a week or more to get my knife, and during that time i question the price and if i could find it cheaper and faster.

These are a few of the reasons I've desided to try my luck with selling knives. I know that it is a tough gig, but i got nothing but time to figure out the best way to get things going. So any feed back from the forums will be considered and more then likely things I myself look for when buying a knife online. Thanks in advance guys.

Welcome to BF!

There are a lot of online retailers, some are better than others! Since I have belonged to many knife forums for years, you get to KNOW who is excellent, has the best customer service and who doesn't. I think knife folks are a very loyal lot. I only buy custom knives, and there is no place around me TO buy custom knives, I buy mine strictly online. I have a few dealers that I buy from, and they have a great selection of the makers that I like to buy. Also, ease of navigation around the site to look at the knives I want to look at makes a big difference to me as well. I also prefer to buy directly from MAKERS as well. I dunno if this helps at all. I hope so.

I have a shortlist of dealers that I buy from, and a longer list of dealers I would consider buying from based on reviews from other buyers.

What I look for when choosing an online dealer: Price. Selection. Reasonable shipping. Reputation. Service. Promptness. Detailed photos and complete accurate specs.

What really pushes me to buy something, even when I don't "need" a new knife: A dealer who has products that no one else carries. Closeouts and discontinued sales.

Here are some "druthers": I'd rather not buy from dealers who primarily advertise junk knives. And I'd rather buy from someone who's involved in the knife community and/or has a history with knife collecting.

Dealers I stay clear of (often applies to eBay dealers): Dealers who regularly advertise items that aren't in stock. Dealers with poor return policies. Dealers who don't respond promptly to emails or customer service calls.

Good Luck!
