Some new stuff...

At the Blade Show we will have some protos of the new RC-3, RC-4 and RC-6 with clip points. This all got started by a federal LEO that wanted the RC-3 MIL with a sharpened false edge. It made such a nice looking knife that we have decided to introduce it into our regular line with all 3 models. Not sure when the actual shipping date will be on these but we will have samples at Blade.

I'm excited about this for sure!

Kinda. Widen the blade up a bit, make a more pronounced finger guard, add a choil, and get rid of that little dip at the end of the blade. :D

And yeah, no cheesy sheaths. I might eat them. ;)

In all honesty, RAT's (RC-6) molded sheaths are very good. Very little rattle and secure retention. I just prefer kydex and the ability to design it how I like. Molds are expensive, or so I'm told, so if it cuts down on the up front cost and speeds it along to production, I'm all for it.

And no recurve...

Clip points... really? Hmmmmmm wouldn't be my first choice... but I am interested to see them. :)

I love clip points. I'm thrilled to hear that the RC line will eventually have them as an option. Will they come in only one version or will the pommel variations, color variations still be available too?

While I'm at it, let me make an early push for the green on green scheme like the RC5. It would be fantastic if that combo was available on some of the other members of the Rat family.

Sounds like somebody has some ideas for the new knife design thread.:D

As for injection molded sheaths, yes, molds are extremely expensive. Like hundreds of thousands of dollars expensive. I was doing some work for BMW, an 8 cavity tool 9 cores and 6 slides per cavity, the mold ended up costing almost 4 mil by the time I had it making parts.

The Kydex is cheaper to get going with but in the long run, you need to pay someone to mold those sheaths one at a time and Kydex material is 50 million times the cost of plastic, possible I exagerate a bit but it's alot more expensive. Won't really cut down on the cost of the knife.

Way I see it, if I want Kydex, I can get it after the fact. Same with leather but If I want the bulletproof, weatherproof plastic it has to come from RAT.;)

There's a design thead?? Where? :D

When bugging Sal about making some molded FRN handles for the mules, we learned that just starting the mold costs upwards of $250,000. :(

Still, it may help speed the design process and limit the cost of the knife to make aftermarket sheaths user supplied.

No recurve???

Tell that to all the guys who buy Kuks for chopping!

Recurves themselves do not a good chopper make. The recurve of the khukri is because of the extra mass and the end of the blade to weight it forward in the hand, and it's a dramatic one at that, combined with a forward cant to the blade. A subtle one on a blade of that style would be more for looks than function, in my opinion.

WOW, I can't wait... three weeks from today I'll be Blade-bound !

And I forgot to add that we are thinking about getting serious with the RTAK style blade. Won't have anything at Blade but I think that will be on the table for this year. We have had a TON of requests for this over-priced short machete!

GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!!! If you guys need any help, I could use a new job. :D
