Some observations from a newbie...

First of all, I'm a 48 yr. old dentist who knew (I get to use PAST tense, lol) nothing about knives until 3 days ago. I never grew up around knives. To this day, I know NOBODY who carries one. After reading this forum for an average of 3-4 hours each of the last 3 days, I'm amazed that I don't know anyone who carries, for it seems like a religion here...part of getting dressed. Some of you carry more in your pockets than I've ever HELD in my life.

Last Thursday I went to a local sporting goods store to purchase a new folding utility box cutter, it was on sale, of course :D . I had a few extra moments, so I looked into the knife display. Long story short, I bought a S&W Extreme Ops tanto blade BECAUSE it was on sale for $19.99 from a retail of $59.99!! I got home feeling pretty good, especially when I figured out what "tanto" meant...until I decided to look on the internet and discovered that EVERYBODY sells that knife for $19.99 :o .

I figured there were better knives out there, heh, so I took that S&W back for a refund. Bottom line, I fell into BladeForums.com while researching. I couldn't believe what I started reading  . Why do people need SIX Spydercos? Why do people KEEP buying more knives? Why does Benchmade make all those numbered knives, and how does anyone remember which is which? Is a Sebenza a sexual device? It must be, cuz everyone seems to orgasm around it....

All the reading and researching is addictive. I've gone to three Gun & Knife stores now this weekend. I put 'em all in my hand and opened and closed 'em, multiple times until the clerks got tired of standing there and answering stupid questions. I nicked my thumb on a Kershaw Leek and drew blood. I almost died....of embarrassment. But man, that Leek was fun! ;)

But now I know what a liner lock is...a frame lock...an Axis. I can tell the difference between a tanto and a drop point, a tang and a choil. I know what EDC, FRN, G10, VG-10, 440A, and S30V refer to. I started remembering what 550, 551, 555, 556, 705, 710, 720, and 806D2 were. I finally figured out what "sheeple" meant..LOL :D I've got a long ways to go, but it's a start...

Anyways, I ended up buying a Kershaw Blackout cuz I had to have an assisted opener and the black looked sweet...and I couldn't pass up the $33 price that I snagged. I hope I don't cut my jewels off running my dogs in the park :footinmou . I'm looking at snagging a Leek...or a Griptilian...or a Calypso Jr...or something else. You can't have just one, right? I might need one for every car, or pocket. The badass big ones will have to wait til I turn 50...I gotta learn how to not cut myself first.

Finally, I give this forum props...lotsa information, camaraderie, passion, and friendliness. I've been on car forums, motorcycle forums, etc...and people get flamed all the time for asking newbie questions or the SAME question over and over, but so far, not this forum. Yes, I do use the SEARCH function, but I do see the same questions answered without pause. Congrats to you guys!

Hah! What joy! Another poor sucker has caught the disease. :)

Welcome to BF and the ruinously expensive world of knives.

When you're done with the cheap knives you'll get a Sebenza, then you'll notice Strider then, (abandon all hope at this point), you'll start wandering through the web pages of the custom makers then ....

Hah!

Ha, this guy is crazy! :D

Funny guy!

"I've been on car forums, motorcycle forums, etc...and people get flamed all the time for asking newbie questions or the SAME question over and over, but so far, not this forum."

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I myself keep comming back.

Welcome to BF.

The addiction has begun.

When you can't remember the number/specifics of the bunch of knives you've got on order you'll know that it's all over.

This actually made me LOL. Qman, gajinoz is right. I orinially bought a S&W tanto and thought it was great; then I found this place. Now, I have a Sebenza, just ordered a Randall, been eyeing the Striders, and currently looking at good custom makers. This perilous, bankrupting trip into knife madness took about three years, it may take you about the same. Enjoy the ride and welcome to the forums.

welcome aboard

i only started acquiring knives about a year ago myself. a little advice: try to buy fewer but better quality knives

i started buying cold steel....crkt etc. now i need to down size and upgrade my knives--and i will lose money doing this

learn from my mistakes.......start out with quality steel and quality companies and you will be far ahead of the game

look at: spyderco...benchmade...swamp rat...bark river...gene ingram...bob dozier.............cant go too wrong with these guys

Be verrrrry careful about where you go... I joined two months ago, been hooked ever since. I always used to think I knew a bit about knives, but now I know a bit more, and once you're hooked... well, it's goodbye Mr. Chips. My advice is to stay in this forum. I went to the tactical forum once and was promptly hooked on other things as well... lol.

Welcome to BF, enjoy your stay. It really is a great place.

Welcome to the hobby and the forums :) Of course, if you take it one step further, you will end up MAKING your own knives! Then, it gets really fun/frustrating :D

Welcome to BF, Doc! You're about to have some real fun and meet the nicest group of knife nutz anywhere. Enjoy! :D

I hope you are the 5th Dentist.
I'd be comfortable going to a Dentist who threw away his pic's and puller's for his Leatherman....
I had to go to Court one time and completely forgot I was toting a blade...and being without it, made me feel more uncomfortable, than the Judge.
I bought my first knife when I was about 5 or 6 years old, with a sack of penny candy, from pop bottle money I made. The wise store owner asked me if I had permission from my Dad to own this knife. I said "oh ya..U betcha." My Dad had me by the ear returning that knife before the day was over. But being a red blooded American boy...I found a blade to call my own soon enough...and haven't been without since.

Finally a FNG that knows how to use the Search button!

Welcome to the Forums Doc and enjoy your journey.
If you're at all like me you'll have come here for the knives and stayed for the people.

Welcome, and oh BTW, your life won't be complete until you own one of these:

:p

Wow, talk about losing your virginity. :D

Welcome to bladeforums. We'll know you really have the disease when you start a thread like:

Which multitiool has the best pliers for pulling teeth?

Glad to have you abord Doc.

(ssssh nobody needs to tell him about customs quite yet :D)

Welcome to the forums. I hope you enjoy your stay. Just remember it's a slippery slope especially with everyone here willing give advice on any and all knife purchases ;) :) :p

Regards,

Nick
