Some of Big South Fork National Park and Pickett State Park in N. TN

I am luck enough to live close to that area, and i have tortured my knees on some of those same rocks, LOL. Thanks for reminding me to get my sorry but back out there, and let me know if you want to come back and i will have the coffee on. Bryan

Thanks, everybody!

Fantastic pics. I really like the shots of the falls under the tree. Thanks for sharing.

I've hiked in BSF and Pickett both. Some great features and tons to look at. Very small crowds typically as well, compared to the Smokies.
I thought that was really cool when I laid down and looked under there!
Is the rest of Pickett worth doing in comparison to other stuff at BSF? They actually have quite a bit of trail there, it seems.

I'm worn out... Thanks for the walk in the woods :)
I have been looking at property in these areas, this confirms I'm looking in the right direction.
I have been thinking close to Fontana Lake, NC and thoughts?
I'm not very familiar with the area. Last time I was around Fontana was just to look at the dam, and think that was 15 or 16 years ago on a trip with my parents, or during Spring Splash at Nantahala Outdoor Center.

Dang! And I didn't even get the invite!:)
Sorry about that!:p I wasn't 100% sure where I was going 'til the day before, anyway. Still want to get up to Savage Gulf in TN, soon, too. Been meaning to since last year.

Sounds like you made out pretty well with your mini trips, there's always next year for the CO and UT trips you canceled  You oughta come out west, I'm hoping to make lambertiana's trip...maybe he has room for another? :)
You know I'd like that. The way my back has been dealing me nasty surprises, then acting as if nothing had happened, I'm a little nervous about making any big plans for multiday trips, especially with other people. This week, I was afraid I was going to have to turn around and go home before I ever started hiking. That's why I got such a late start on Tuesday, and had to hike out in the dark and all. The weekend before my trip last week, I got trapped on the bed(crap, maybe that was the week before, and I had problems again the next week...), and couldn't get up. Then 3 and 4 days later I'm climbing up and down cliffs. I imagine that one of these times I'm going to get stuck somewhere out in the boonies for an extra day.
Not gonna start taking extra food, though. I could stand to lose a few pounds!

Nice trip report - thanks for sharing. I've taken a couple of canoe trips down BSF.
That would be awesome! I'd love to go up there for a week, and take my mountain bike and sit-on-top kayak. The big map has the distances and classes of rapids for the river runs, which had already got me thinking about it. Using my bike as a shuttle on those steep grades is probably a little on the wishful thinking side, though.

That's what I post pics for;) Hope it makes someone want to get out there, anyway.
I like coffee! Not sure when I'll be back, but will try to remember to send you a message when I do. Thanks:thumbup:

Yeah buddy, I know how that goes, a little bit anyway. I don't have it oscillate quite as much as you do; once I get some pain and tightness, it takes a while for it to go away completely. I can't touch my toes when my back acts up, very annoying. No slipped discs or anything so far, but I've strained my back twice before and it's entirely no fun. I've been trying to work on core strengthening and stretching more, but I admit I could be doing more to ensure better back health. One of these days, I should probably see a chiropractor just in case.

Anyway, you've got a standing invitation for a shorter trip out here with me if you like, if your back isn't inspiring multi-day confidence this coming year

Thanks. One day at a time, but I've been very blessed this year, and it's not quite over yet! Depending on how the family stuff goes, and if I'm not working OT from a guy being on vacation, I may still get a quickie overnighter in Wed/Thur. Forecast clearing and mid 20s/mid 40s, so I hope so. Perfect weather for good sleeping, and comfortable hiking!

Looking back at the Honey Creek Loop more objectively, I think it lends itself to exaggeration. The canyon is not THAT deep; the trail is not THAT long. I think the constant ups and downs, coupled with the general lack of visibility toward the bottom of the canyon blows it out of proportion in the mind. What's interesting to me, though, is that when it was over I physically felt like I'd done 2-3 times the distance that I actually had. Quite different from any other trail I've done of that length. Regardless, it is way up there on my list of favorite single day hikes, and I've been fortunate enough to have done some that are world-renowned in the last couple of years.

Cool. Saw you're in Vegas-right close to my favorite places in the world! This year I went in April, and took my dad. Took him to Bryce, Zion, Valley of Fire, and Red Rock. Had a ball, but only got to do one quick overnighter at Zion on my own, since I was playing tour guide.

Great shots man, that's a beautiful area. I love all of the arches and waterfalls. I need to get up that way one day. We have a few stone arches here, mostly on way out of the way trails which is really cool because of fewer people.

Great looking place, really makes me want to get back over to the US for some more travelling. Thanks for posting.

Mistwalker, Give me a holler anytime you want some company in Big South Fork i live close and love to hike there.

Nice pics thanks for the info, will have to check it out in person. Took one of my boys to Jericho Walls(-after one of your adventure /photo post) on a Dad-Son adventure prior to him going to Parris, Island(USMC Boot camp). He graduates Jan 4th.

Hope you enjoyed it, and congratulations to your son on graduating! I always have fun there. Actually thinking about going up there Wednesday, and seeing where I can get to on top to rappel down by the falls if they're flowing. That's something I wanted to do this year, but haven't made time for.

Great pics man! I live less than an hour away from there and have pounded dirt there for close to 15 years. Let me know if you get back this way.

Mmmm, Knoxville. You're right in the middle of all kinds of stuff around there-that's a nice area. Don't know when I'll be back, but I'll definitely BE back!

WJC01, I did a quick overnighter to the Walls of Jericho to end out the year, and the water was flowing more than I'd ever seen it. The creeks were almost full, and the waterfall was cranking pretty good. Put a few pics in the sticky up top:

Most Excellent Owen. When did Big South Fork become a National Park? I have never spent any time there and I absolutely need to go!

Man, I love Big SoFo. Some beautiful areas, great hiking and kayaking.
