:DAs we all know, Zero Tolerance is a great producer of heavy-duty knives. The 30x and the 0121 are both strider collaborations. If you knew nothing about either knife, and you knew strider had somthing to do with the production, would you be more inclined to purchase that knife over somthing else, based on name alone? I know I would.

Also, if you knew a knife was decently made, and was a good knife, but made a less-than-reputable company, would you be less inclined to buy that knife?

Just somthing to think about. To me, brand name trust means alot, how 'bout you? :o

Brand name helps if I know what the company brings out and if they bring out good stuff. If a company constantly brings out crap, I dont really care about new offerings. If it is a young or new company, my interest is peaked however.

Brand names and designers are just starting points. I won't buy knife X just because it was made by company Y and designed by knife maker Z. The knife has to appeal to me and be something I'd use.

Would I buy a ZT just because of the Strider involvement? Nope. I wouldn't buy a ZT without Strider's involvement. I have no need for such a large, overly built and in my opinion horrifically ugly knife. Same for Strider. I know they're great knives, made out of top notch materials, but the designs just don't speak to me.

Would I buy a knife from a less than reputable company? If it were well made, and I liked the design and the company stood behind their product, sure I'd buy it.

I've said before, I couldn't care less who makes the knife or where the knife is made. If I like it, I'll consider buying it.

I am more likely to look at knives made by brands I know and trust, but if nothing there appeals to me, I'll move on until I find something I do like. Fortunately, I don't need a new knife every month so I can wait until something I like comes up without going into withdrawal.

Name means alot if quality and integrity go along with it. If the owner of the company was someone who has less than mediocre integrity, I tend to avoid that brand. I tend to look at maker, then model. I do not like all models from any maker. I usually desire a few models from any one maker, til I get into slipjoints, then I have a huge paradigm shift.

This has nothing to do with knives, it's about evaluating who makes those knives, so I'm moving this from General Knife to FEEDBACK.

Keep in mind, this is dangerous territory, openly inviting people to blurt out their prejudices and resentments. An old story, and not one with a happy ending, after members turn on each other over empty words.

Keep it polite.

Well, I consider myself pretty adventurous when it comes to that kind of thing. If the knife suits my tastes, I'd definitely consider it over a branded model of the same price, which didn't really suit my needs. I mean, we're just talking about a product with basically just two elements, a blade and handle (which in some cases use the same material). So, there are many many makers out there who are capable of competing with the big guys.

However, when it comes to the internet, branded is probably better since you have more chances of handling a knife from a known maker (to base judgments on) than an unknown one. Plus, a big maker would probably have some form of customer service system on hand, should you have problems. And lets not forget resale. No matter how nice your knife is, you won't be able to sell it for a good price if nobody knows what it is, where it came from.

That said, if there was a maker near me who's willing to listen to the customer's needs, then I'd take that over anything else.

I like the Strider AR I have and would like to eventually get a second one, but them having a hand in developing the ZT0300 series, and the small fixed blade doesn't make me more prone to buy.

Brand name is a factor but one of the most important factors for me is real life experience. I like seeing and hearing about a knife in use as well as any problems people have with them. For the most part you can trust a brand name if they have a good track record but it is only part of the decision making process.

I dont understand how this has nothing to do with knives. oh well.

I'm a huge fan of the people who give their knives the "lifetime guarantee no matter what." That's some major brands but it's also some custom knife makers that are "smaller" names...the fact that someone is willing to replace my knife, should it fail, with a free new one, no matter what....that speaks VOLUMES to me.
