The larger seaxen, incidentally, were very much sidearms. Fun stuff :)

Love the history of knives, and sounds like you've done some home work. I always thought a seax was a utility knife, but I suppose any good sized knife could be pressed into service for defense.

I find it fascinating that different populations/cultures found different solutions, i.e. knife designs, to solve the same basic cutting/stabbing problems.

When you say long seax, how long is that? And do I need one? :D

We run into problems with words like this- seax and the related scramasax span a thousand years, You can find a lot of variation.

extant examples range from a couple inches to a coule feet. An earlier period langseax would be broader and heavier - more like a long KSA than a later period, which becomes more swordlike.

There is a lot of room for interpretation with this much history and geographical breadth. Which makes it fun :D

do you need a scandinavian short sword? Well.... I know my answer, the first one is hanging on the wall, but i am working on a better one, in fits and starts as i have time. I'll probably finish mine when I have some orders in for them :D

This is my utilitkilt wearing idea of a sgian dubh- 4 inches (blade) of sgian dubh badness. Rotte, do I HAVE to blue it? I haven't buffed to high satin yet, and the filework isn't done. but damn, I'm liking this one. I think I wanna do more.

The Utilikilt Sgian Dubh--I love it!

Looking at it now, I believe bluing would be a mistake. Maybe for the next one we could do an Ivory micarta with a blued blade. :D

This one looks like it's going out of the park.

The small pirate is way too cute. You must be a proud papa.

I just finished a sheath for the sgian dubh, here it is:

what you can't see is that it also has two straps on the back.

Those are looking outstanding Christof. That dirk is really looking sharp.
I really like the way the temper line shows on the smaller knife with the light wood handles--striking! Did you 'back draw' that blade?

That's a fairly small one, just a hair under 4 inches, so the draw temper (differential temper) line is pretty acute near the tip. But that's what all the blades get, I just most often polish it off if i'm doing a bright finish or leave the very subtle marks on if it is a forge finish.

Well it looks good man. Nice little drop point. You know I'm a sucker for a small blade. :D

speaking of which....

well, ya have to fight bearthedog for that one :D

Your project hasn't been photgraphed, nor have 3 others in progress, all because of some special bits. In your case, it's .. well. You'll see the pics. But the sgian dubh should see your hands shortly.
