Here's a short review of the Shallots I posted a few days ago. Since then, it's had 100% pocket time, and the only drawback as I can tell at this point is it's a little slippery when working with gloves or wet hands. The AO has loosened up a bit, is very quick to open and the lock up is great. Still very sharp, after splintering some kindling and playing with a piece of 1/2 inch hemp rope.
This platform is perfect for future upgrades. It's a perfect size/shape for frame (Ti?) and blades (S30V, 154CM and ZDP). I can see a bunch of sprint runs for this knife!
Here's my post from earlier:
There be Shallots here!
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ken and Kershaw have another winner!
Well, I just got the two Shallots I ordered last night from The Knife Center. Delivery took less than 24 hours.
I'm running a little short on time, so here's a quick review. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.
My first impression was that this knife is bigger than I expected. By my ruler, overall length is 8 inches, the blade is 3 1/2", and closed it measures almost 4 3/4 inches. It's thin, at 3/8ths of an inch measured at the top middle of the handle. The thickest point of the blade is about 1/4 of an inch, right at the thumb rest. Weight is 4.4 oz., but it feels heavier.
It's has a beautiful satin finish on the handle and blade with no distinction between the handle and blade. The clip is almost 3 inches long and 3/8ths of an inch wide at its widest point. The style fits the knife very well, as it also has the same satin finish. It has a very nice feel to it, and is very well balanced. Open, it gives a very natural grip, and it feels good either out on my fingers or further up in my palm. I'm not too sure how well this frame will work with wet or sweaty hands. It's slick.
The blade has a slight, barely noticeable recurve. I'm going to have to get some other Kershaws out, as the blade shape looks very much like the Groove. Imagine a smooth blade Groove, but with less recurve. There is a little false edge along the top spine of the blade from the tip to about 3/4 of an inch from the handle, and it blends well with the blade shape. Both of them are extremely sharp, taking a patch of hair off my arm with one swipe.
Fit and finish are excellent, and I haven't found a flaw on either one anywhere.
The AO is tight, as is to be expected with all new Kershaw AO's. It opens quickly, and with a noticeable "Thwack" when it locks up. Right now, the frame lock engages the blade exactly half-way. It does lock up tight!
This one's a winner, and will make an excellent platform for future enhancements (handle overlays, high end blades, etc). All in all, a great value for $ 50. It looks and feels like it should cost a lot more.
I'd definitely add this one to your short list...its got enough heft to be a real user, yet it has a sleek, stylish appearance.
Kershaw's got another winner!
