Some SAK love

Almost forgot. (That never happens.)

I thought a little comparison might be fun.

Here's two Swiss officer's knives from roughly the same time period. The Victorinox is a 84 mm tourist from 1952–1957, the Wenger is a bit shorter, 83 or 82 mm and from the late 50s or early 60s. The Wenger is a true equal end while the Vic has a slight swell end shape. Obviously the shields are different, the Wenger also has birds eye rivets. The red plastic may look the same, but it actually isn't. Wenger used a type of nylon and Vic uses celidor. Vic uses more modern opener tools, especially their patented can opener. The bottle opener also has a somewhat sharpened inside and notch for stripping wires. Vic's corkscrew has 5 turns vs Wenger's 4 turns. The Wenger has tang stamps on both blades while Vic stamped only the main blade (but at the time also the can opener). In this particular case the Vic also has scale tools, but not all did. Otherwise both have aluminium liners, grooved corkscrews, big awls and in this case additional blade etches: Weber Luzern (probably a knife shop) on the Vic and Stoppani S.A. Berne (a machine manufacturing company, founded in 1913) on the Wenger.

I got my Explorer back yesterday (first version) its been stripped and rebuilt, the only bit changed was the fluted corkscrew, which they returned.
New scales, toothpick and tweezers included, I added the pin and mini driver.
The tools are all polished and look like new,all the snap is back its maybe even better than new from the close attention its had.
I may take of the keyring loop as its better in the hand without,I shall use this one.

This was the first SAK I just couldn't fix to any usable degree myself.
Victorinox have done all this for £10 including postage. its been to Switzerland and back,I would say that is terrific service.

I have 3 explorers 2 old and one new version, one old one is totally unmolested a bit of a collectors piece.

The older version is also maybe better with a longer in line Phillip's, no pointless back tools like the hook, screwed scissors you can adjust and stronger magnifier.

Size, weight and tools the Explorer is the best/most usable urban type carry, though out in the woods I mostly choose the Alox farmer.
