Someone convince me to actually use the knives I love.

You better believe it got more scratched in the almost 2 years I've been wearing it than the scratch I gave it when I bought it :D

I never take it off but to change the date. It is also the only watch I own. It's rare that a dude can find his "grail" piece. This is my "grail" watch. I am done.

That's awesome man. Hopefully I can make myself use my Grail knives like you use your Grail watch!

(I know that my "grail" knives are low end in the big scheme of things)

10 years ago, I considered a Halo3 a "grail"... Over a year ago, I had a Brend Nemesis, which I considered a "grail"... same with a 97 D/A Socom tanto bead blast. A true "grail" item is one that you have wanted for ages AND is something you have no problems using. I own less than 15 knives. One tactical light. One watch.

I recently sold a CPM-D2, BG-42 and S90V Military. Not because I needed the cash, but because they were duplicates that I felt would be better off in the hands of someone that would actually use them. I realized as well, that I wouldn't wear out my keepers in this lifetime.

Today, I received my DLC coated, limited edition (200), Benchmade 710-1 with M390 steel. This is a partner to my uncoated version. Both will be 'users' because I love the design and the steel. Unless we are talking 'boutique' knives, the greatest tribute to the designer is to actually use and enjoy the knife.

Some knives its harder to use than others...i couldnt bring myself to take the NIB status off my s90v millie so i sold it for a NIB price. On the other hand i couldnt care less putting my sebenza to use...it needs to be touched up right now after going trough a bunch of cardboard yesterday...

:eek: I guess we are all different. I used the crap out of my S90V Millie, but a Sebenza for cardboard!? I just wouldn't have the cajones.

Well i have a CF s30v Millie thats well used, and i just couldnt use the pristine s90v one while having an already used cf millie...And my sebbie is just a sm reg and its a user and its what i had on me at the time;) I kinda regret selling the millie it, but it would just be sitting in a box...its new owner will enjoy it im sure:thumbup:

I cant wait to use them -- as soon as i get it in my hand - i cut something -- no matter what i paid for it or how it looks - in fact the more i paid for it the more i want to cut something with it -- LOL

Convince me to use and abuse my most loved blades!

Let me turn the tables on you. Explain why you want your wife's next husband (God forbid) to inherit a bunch of pristine blades. :)

I say that he inherits a bunch of beaters with your blood, fingerprints, rust and pork fat on them that constantly remind him of whose shoes he has to fill.

[I know, as a student maybe you aren't yet married. But you get the point.]

Funny I came home and found this thread, I picked up a Case genuine stag swayback jack on the way to the job this morning and slipped it in my pocket before I got to the jobsite. I used it at lunchtime to cut up some cheddar for me and the guys, wiped it off then put it back in my pocket. When I got home I looked at this thing and thought DAMN this little knife is gorgeous! I don't know if I can EDC it again until I have a duplicate. Those nickel silver bolsters look like they'll scratch pretty damn easy. :(

RE: The OP

...I kinda get what your saying if we're talking about fancy/pretty knives.

But common, a HEST and an ESEE 5? Dude that kind of knife doesn't even look right till it's got some battle scars on it. Not to mention that they start to slice better as the coating wears smooth. :)

My 3 favorite knives are the same ones you listed. It makes me smile to use them, put a scratch or a bunch on the coating. Pound the 5 through a branch. Use em up!

You're completely right. It's just hard for me because I saved for these things for so long that I'd hate myself if something happened to them.

But on the flip side of that I think I'm beginning to appreciate the fact that I'm not really enjoying these knives unless I'm using them.

That is hilarious! My fiancée really doesn't understand why I buy so many knives. She would probably just throw them out if we were married and got a divorce.

You have good taste. Haha!

And I'm trying to put them to use, I really am. I'm thinking about going outside and batoning the 5 through a piece of wood when it gets here so I'm not worried about scratching it.

Like some of the others here, I buy two of each knife I feel that way about: One for the pocket, and one for the collection/safe. This strategy, however, can get expensive!

If you feel uncomfortable about using any of your knives, then DON'T. Just do what gives you the most satisfaction. Your knives are for your enjoyment however you choose to enjoy it.

If you need something to cut with, get something that doesn't give you any misgivings to use.

Sounds like you've got good feelings about your upcoming marriage...

Oh I do. I wouldn't talk about divorce with such a light mood if I thought there was any chance of that in our future. She's definitely the best thing that's happened to me. Although you can't ignore the fact that half of all marriages end in divorce.

Trust, the satisfaction of using a quality tool is fantastic. You'll just think to yourself, "Why did I use sub-standard tools all along when I could have done it right the first time!"

And anyway, bad things will still happen to them even if you're not using them and just carrying them around. Case in point:
