Someone put this up on my property (illegally)...what is it?!

I hope it's ok I put this here...I wasn't sure where it fit because I have no idea what it is :D

I was walking around the property, which I try to do several times a year to look for downed trees and the like, and stumbled upon this. It couldn't have been up there to long, because I checked Labor Day weekend. At first I thought it may be a step to a tree stand, but it's pretty close to a road and the two boards are pretty far apart. The climber would have to be a giant!

My pup (seen at the bottom) was freaking out, so I don't know if it was used to hang a deer or something of the sort. The property is posted, so either way it shouldn't be up there. I've had problems with the guy down the street thinking he can hunt on our property, even though we keep telling him he isn't allowed. That's an entirely different thread, though.

I should mention, a power company has a maintenance road quite close to it.

It's a shot in the dark but here is the object being questioned, hopefully someone can shed some insight. Thanks guys.

Is that the only two steps, or are there more above it?

Could it be the beginning of kids' tree house? I'd like to think that at least some kids still do this. :(

Nope this is it lol...i'd be alright with the tree house thing if it was in the family. With how sue happy people are these days though, that would just be a lawsuit waiting to happen

I really hope we're both wrong, I hate the idea of poaching. There are deer bones in the area, but they are really old. I guess it would be ironic.

A bit of browsing online photos showed wooden rack setups of the same size, but none nailed to trees.

It's bad enough to hunt on posted property, but to do something like that...
It's the very reason that people DO post their property.

Obviously Satanists have been using your property for their rituals. Call your local exorcist.

I knew a farmer who patrolled his loader tractor down the back roads that bordered his property in deer season.

The friends he gave permission parked in his yard, so anyone parked on the backroad and hunting on his posted property,
had their vehicles rolled into the ditch.

It didn't take long for them to go elsewhere & tell all their friends too.

Pull them down. If the power company or a friend comes by and asks, tell them it didn't look right and they could have mentioned it before they put them up. If you leave them there, it's inviting further activity.

I agree - pull them down and post another sign where it lived.

If that doesn't send a strong enough signal you might have bigger fish to fry.

Here's a couple of signs. I like the first one. :D

While I'm pretty sure you are using sarcasm and dont actually suggest using these particular signs I feel the need to tell this story that was told to my parents from a police officer instructing their ccw class:

Apperently a man had signs like these outside his home. A man did break in and hit the homeowner in the head with a tire iron. The home owner got up and shot the intruder dead. The homeowner is serving 30 years because they claimed with these signs he was looking for a fight.

Again I'm sure you were making a joke but I think this is good info for people with these signs

Yes, it was meant as a joke.

As JParanee suggested, a trail camera might be a good idea. They aren't very expensive.

was the strap on it when you found it? Were there any signs of people around it or marks on the ground? I'm wondering if somebody didn't use it to pull something. But then why wouldn't they just wrap the strap around the tree?

edit: Maybe they used it to stretch a skin? Do you have rabbits possums or racoons?

Thanks for all the suggestions. As far as trail cams go, I thought about that. I'm afraid to even put them up because a few years ago someone tampered with the tree stands (loosened the ratchet straps that keep the stand tight to the tree) and frayed the string used to pull the gun up once you get up into the stand. It's obvious they were aiming to cause bodily harm. My gun actually fell as I pulled it up...

Anyways, I KNOW that if I put up a trail cam it wouldn't be in the same condition the next time I go to check it.

Yeah the strap was on it...but not really any signs of activity. There is plenty of game around! Judging by the dog's reaction, I want to say there was an animal near it.

Use a camera that has no flash so if they are entering your property in the dark the flash does not give away your location

Brush the camera in a bit and see what ya see.

It is very hard to find bow hunters that sneak in your property

So walk the best deer spots funnels , edges etc. Look up and look for signs of people using climbers scuffed bark etc

They will be targeting good deer spots target these areas and eventually u will catch them

I ve already had my dogs cut track and go right up o tree and look up :)

Problem is I can't get out there very often...but i'll borrow your dogs if you're offering! :D:D

I think i'll take a chance and put out a trail cam, though.

I would pull them down for sure. Let that guy know he is not welcome. Perhaps write a sign and nail it up in its place saying "stop poaching on my land".
