someone ruined a great knife

Let's see, that model looks like an "Ang Khola style Dhankuta" from 2003, probably a bit over 12 inches and weighing about 11 ounces?

The khukuri is the convention special. We have about a half dozen left for sale. All made by Bura. He knows I'm a fan of the combo handle so that's what he made.
Top is bone cured by Bura himself and bottom is standard buff horn. The seam that joins the two pieces is invisible. Perfect fit and finish.

The mounting is "white metal." I'm not sure exactly what metal it is but it is non magnetic. Can't tell by looking if it is a silver alloy or not. But Bura's usual fine work.

I guess I'd call this an Ang Khola style Dhankuta. It's a bit over 12 inches and weighs about 11 ounces.

...this model will never be made again so it becomes a 2003 convention collector model.

yeah thats it, well worth the 70 bucks even with the ground down edge-- also proves bura varied between the horizontal and vertical crescents, because I have a vertical from 2006 or so on a ww2 satin finish-- thanks a lot steve, I had no idea about its actual date just knew it was pre 2005

That's a beautiful thing, I love the handle on that. I gotta believe a good sharpener could fix that thing right back up.

I love that handle, oh I already said that...........................

Well thats a beautiful knife. Not near as bad as I expected to see but still sad to see that happen to such a rare model. Certainly looks like you could carefully work the edge down by hand enough to get it back to convex and polish all the grind marks off with minimal material removal. Would be a lot of work but getting rid of them grind marks would make it look more like the AK it is.

yeah job is open for anyone who thinks they can put a hollow grind back on it ( i think thats what HI comes as? ) not sure, to restore to as close to original as possible the edge

I know I can do it but I don't consider myself a professional knife sharpener so lets see what the pros say. If no luck from the pros send it to me and ill do it just for the glory of saving the Bura name! More than likely they ground it to make the edge more acute and familiar with what they are used to since it is such a small knife. But it is an AK and there should be some meat behind the edge. I think it can be restored. Someone just ground some years of service off of it but whats 25 years if the knife last 150 years anyway? Nice find btw. $70 was still a steal!

From the looks of it there is a good chance the heat treat is intact. During the sharpening process it will become apparent though whether or not it's still fine

Beautiful knife. Shame they don't make those ones anymore otherwise I would Have to get one.

its nice for once to have the damage be not as bad as you thought instead of worse than you thought

to see if the blade temper was hurt, see if you can make a mark with a file on the edge along the sweet spot. if it slides off, the temper is ok. if it cuts in but needs quite a bit of pressure and only makes a tiny mark, the edge could still be ok. i would have to see the knife in order to really tell.

to put a new convex edge on (not hollow grind :D) , you're looking at around $20 plus shipping.

nice an easy, i dont know much about it (edge types and how to sharpen for certain edges), so thanks , 20 sounds really reasonable

Oh the blade is fine. I really thought the previous owner ground away the belly and other curves of the knife.
Its just the edge you don't like?
No big deal and easy fix if you really want to. Am I right that all what happened is that you prefer convex vs V-edge? http://www.egullet.com/imgs/egci/sharpen/sharpen102.jpg
Convex is good for prolonged chopping of hard stuff. If however you like softer targets better V is perfectly fine.
How about double beveled? Fast to accomplish and almost convex :)
If its still sharp, use it until its dull. When you have to resharpen it anyways, add a bit of time for reprofiling.

nah i just prefer that the original edge hammered in by bura was there :D, yeah im very happy its much less catastrophic than I thought

Cool! Happy ending! Sure is nice to have all the professional experience in one place isnt it? $20 clams! Cant beat that for a lifetime of experience:thumbup:

That edge isn't bad, just not like the factory edge. Sounds like Richard can get taken care of. :)

That's a cool little Bura. Congrats!!

I expected much worse. That's fixable with a stone or my favorite tool is sandpaper and a plain old block. Start with 220 and work your way up to finer grits until you have a polished razors edge.

I have been looking into actually learning how to sharpen just for the two khukuri i do use, my siru and villagers -- almost all my knives are bought as art pieces so they have original edges and I dont mess much with sharpening, but yeah im pretty happy about the situation, i tested the hardening and it seems very solid the file did not bite .

its good to know that the heat treat is ok. if you want to give sharpening a try, i can talk you through it if you send me your number (talking on the phone is easier for me).
