Something different for me....

Thanks everyone!

I like the blade a lot. The handle looks a bit massive to me, and maybe would have worked better for me if six- or eight-sided, rather than a rectangular cross section throughout.

With the Ti bolsters I was limited to only rounding the edges. I have another in the planning stages with solid bronze/coper guard and pommel. This will allow me to shape the guards and handle to my liking. I am with you and much prefer a more rounded flat oval handle.

Tom

Actually, I'm not a fan of the rounded handles. I like facetted handles best - 8-sided preferably.

Great effort, Tom, with a very nice result.

Those who can, do.........................those who cannot become critics.

Well said, Sir....

Some folks are so full of themselves that they couldn't find their a$$ with both hands........brown eyes and stinky breath. ;)

Controversy's OK. Some people like stuff, and some people don't. The criticism so far has been constructive - which lets the maker re-think the design and maybe take the next one in a different direction or tweak aspects of the design.

I really like the lines on the blade. The handle is OK. The palm is an interesting pattern, and the colored Ti is different. The visible fasteners detract a bit. It's almost like the blade and handle don't match - the blade has kind of a medieval-fantasy feel, while the handle is more techno-punk. I wonder if some sort of dimpling pattern on the Ti would echo the palm and soften the transition from handle to blade (a la the "fizzed" Sebenzas). Tom gets bonus points for balancing the two out and making it a functional combination. More bonus points for going out of your comfort zone. I'm looking forward to the next blade in this series!

WHEN is the last time that you offered constructive criticism, Dudley Dawkins, instead of the usual "Woo-hoo, bro-speak, high-five, awesomeness" thing?

While I agree that blade deserves even "more" handle... Keep in mind that Tom did this all with a very short timeline!!!!

Gosh, STevie.....since no names were ever mentioned, I guess the shoe fits?!?

Constructive critisim is one thing, arrogance and egomania are another.....;)

I thought this was supposed to be a thread on Tom's blade... not a pissing contest among unrelated parties. Can we keep the discussion relative to the sword?

I dig the blade, as I have a weakness for hamon. Did you do the clay coat and quench yourself, Tom?

IMO, it would have benefitted from the grind coming straight out of the handle, with no choil/ricasso, maybe a little shorter handle, and definitely no visible fasteners....that just kills the look of grace that the blade conveys, and hurts the "art" aspect of it.

On the other hand, you are absolutely to be commended for the effort, and clearly thinking outside of the box.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I see neither arrogance nor egomania in this post. I see contsructive criticism. STeven is far from the only poster to be less enamored of the handle than the blade, but all seem to agree it was a terrific effort and an impressive result.

Well said!

On Topic:

I think it's a great looking blade, and the more I look at it the more I like it and the more the handle seems to fit with the blade. If it was my knife I would like the handle a little smaller, as that would fit my hands better. The "visible fasteners" don't bother me.

Tom , You did a Tremendous job on this Knife !!! Especially since it was the first time You made a Sword of This type and Design .:thumbup:..

I've never seen anything quite like this sword. It's almost like a lightsabre, with it's 'mechanical' handle belching out a white hot, ephemeral, ghostly blade.

I didn't like it when I first looked at it. It keeps drawing me back though, and now sometimes when I close my eyes I still see it in my mind.

This piece stands on its own merits and is unconventional enough to be what it is, withstanding criticism of any kind. I think it falls squarely into the realm of 'art'.
