Something is wrong with my school

Unsafe environment. If those words don't give your principal a swift boot in the right direction, nothing will. I'd still get the cops involved, as assault and battery is a serious offense. Not a slap on the wrist, that.

That is, I feel, a well written and pointed letter. I hope you won't have to submit it, but as was mentioned, it would be a good idea to bring that with you to step #1.

Sometimes, taking the high road is a pain in the arse.

I feel bad about this. to make a long story short, I am probably younger than RTDB, but grew up in the punk scene. Because of this, I had to fight alot. Way more than is healthy, and it made school a very unpleasant place for me. I'm sad to say that the way I got through it was to learn to fight, and call people out if they said anything to me. I'm glad that the younger generation is more level headed. But seriously, a skull fracture? that goes into major lawsuit territory.

This is insane. Every possible authority at every possible level needs to be involved. Since you all are moving, you have generous leeway in aggressively defending your friend and this situation.

I am a staunch social and economic conservative, but hate crime has a special place in my heart (as I think is the case with most conservatives). A few years ago, the Jewish cemetary section where my mother is buried was vandalized. Some very old stones were smashed and my mother's huge and elaborate stone was knocked off it's pedastal. I congratulate the Oklahoma justice system, because the perps were given 20 years with no chance of parole for 10 years. The cemetary is right across from a fire station and it didn't take long for the firefighters to take notice of what was going on.

Those little PTards need to be in Juvvie...not running free.

When I went to scool(long ago) it was a lot more violent than now. You won't like it but, your friend may be a "I DON'T BELIEVE IN VIOLENCE" BUT ,he should have fought back.Had a kid in school that was beat ,abused everyday, one of the toughest said,IF he fought ,I would have respected him & his views, could he beat me,NO but I would have listened to him!Diff. time I guess, just don't share your views. You have to sometimes fight, you may not want to ,may not like it,that's reality!

Needleremorse, the bottom line is few "adults" have the courage to do what's right. Good luck on your efforst to awaken them from their cowardly slumber.

I went down to the principals office, made an appointment, and was called down at lunch. I told her the full story, and I told her that Dave wasn't comfortable coming to school, and that I didn't like how this was being handled. She said she was still investigating, so to cool off for now. I do know that when I went to the office for the appointment the secretary asked me what I wanted and standing next to me was the kid who was threatening Dave, so it was a little awkward  :) Anyway, our younger Social Studies teacher was appalled by the administration and wrote a note to the principal telling her to talk to me. It's not over yet, but at least the police are involved.

Needle this is serious stuff. Your his friend..you need to do the right thing. You need to get the police involved for your own friends saftey. Planning on punching or stabbing or killing your friend is a crime. Its called assault.
When I was a kid in high school I also was a kid very much like your friend..but in my day we were punk rockers..anyway..several kids..all bigger than me made my senior year a living hell. I wont bore you with the details but it involved beatings and mental torture. Calling someone a "fag" and beating on them is a hate crime. It goes beyond bullying. If the school has a hands off attitude..dude call the cops yourself. You need to do the right thing and stand in the gap for your friend.

on a personal note. Needle my son is one year younger than yourself, You are a great kid. I hope your parents are proud of you...

Does anyone here see any connection between this thread and the thread that I started in the Political Forum on homophobia? Reh, you are damned right that it is a hate crime and you are also damned right that it must be stopped or it will get worse. That is the way of it.

NeedleRemorse, I do not envy either you or your friend, but you must do whatever needs to be done to stop these bastards and you need to do it now! They could very easily have killed your friend rather than breaking a bone near his eye. And they could still do it. And, for the record, remember that the classic profile of a high school shooter is the kid who has been isolated and then bullied half to his wits' end. Better that the damned educational bureaucrats who run your school deal wwith the situation now, before it gets that far.

Fortunately, Dave is very anti-violence and I can guarantee he would never respond like that (he's actually anti-gun, so to maintain our friendship we have to avoid political questions and the like  :D ).

The principal should tell these sociopaths that if anything happes to Dan or his friend during the investigation, they will be held responsibe.

I mean anything. If one of them slips on a banana peel - those punks should be held responsible.

Which reminds me: A couple of years ago, a football player was hazed, and during the process had a (how do I word this for Community?) banana inserted into him against his will while he was being held down (and trust me, they weren't putting it in his mouth). They also "teabagged" him, and they were only suspended for 5 days, but still allowed to play at the "Superbowl". :barf:

What is with that school? The incident you described is a SEXUAL ASSAULT!

Those who committed it should have been jailed, where hopefully the same thing should have happened to them!

Start with the idea that he ought to fight back. The gun stuff can come later. :)
You could try explaining to him that your philosophy obligates you to fight back in these situations. His refusing to fight means that you to fight them alone, placing you at greater risk.
By the way, I think you description of events was clearer than Dave's. Even if you can't convince him to fight, you can help him write up a smooth-flowing, quick-and-dirty narrative that shows exactly what's happened here and how dangerous the situation really is (and how negligent the school has been so far).
And yes, this absolutely relates to the discussion of homophobia in political.

regardless of what the principle says...
1. Press Charges like the others have said
2. Inform the school board and Super Intendant (probably misspelled)
The school should have a zero tolerance policy
3. I personally would call the local news anyway and advise them on the situtation. Let others know about this school.

my 0.02..

sorry to hear it man..

There are new no bullying rules in the federal No child left behind law. Do a search for them. They actually detail what will happen to a school when they ignore these things and give guidlines.

States and local districts must implement policies allowing students to transfer to other, safer schools if they have been victims of violent crimes while at school or if their home school is judged to be “persistently dangerous.” It is hoped that this provision will prompt schools to develop programs that reduce violence and bullying and promote a positive learning environment.

There are penalties for administartors that do not follow guidlines and act.

When you talk to your principal bring up the act.

Some people were born tight-assed.

Good luck dealing this thing out, and if you have any trouble with the punks, just call up your friends at bladeforums... We'll help...

I just talked to his mom, she said she doesn't see keeping him in the school as an option because of how this has been handled. Today, around 20 kids lobbied outside of the Principal's office and were turned away. A few of them had shirts that said "Save Dave". There might be a walk-out tomorrow in protest.

No school needs zero tolerance policies. Zero tolerance leads to victims being punished equally with the bullies against whom they defend themselves.

Zero tolerance is bureaucratic jargon for zero discretion, a way for administrators to shrug off their responsibility for dealing with the normal, if intimidating behavior of young adults testing the limits of societal displeasure.

It's not that hard to let them know where the lines are drawn, and to enforce these rules on a case by case basis. Behavior that falls within the scope of criminal activity can be dealt with by the criminal justice system.

In his Oresteia, a trilogy following the story of Agamemnon's murder and his son's revenge, Aeschylus reminded us that if society is not structured to enforce certain restrictions on violent behavior, the people most directly affected will do so, and all of society will suffer from the ongoing feud.

They can deal with a punch in the face now or they will deal with homicide later.

Keep up and intensify the stink...good work. Badger the media until they can't ignore it.
