Something outside the box for next year

I am blessed to make knives for fun. One of the ways I keep it fun is to build something a bit off-the-wall once in a while. Last year I built a 14" long stiletto, and also finally built my little fish shaped knife.

This year, I'm planning a stainless integral keyhole hunter. I'm also planning a knife with steampunk-ish turnable gears inside the handle.

What crazy plans do you have for next year's knives?

Your knives are fabulous. Steampunk sounds fun. I can't wait to see it.
If you get bored, I would like you to build me a really off the wall knife. It sorta plays off of your Triple D design. It would be called the H-Double D. It would be 1/2' thick D2, 12" long blade, cocobolo handle, pry pommel! The House Disassembly Device! :encouragement:

I am really into wire wrapping pendants with all kinds of different gemstones..I mean i dont do it myself but admire the craft and buy a few pieces a year from others, Ive long wanted to collaborate and some how apply that to a knife...maybe next year

First crazy project on my list is a laddered W or firestorm yanagi-ba, depending on how my twisting arm is doing at the time. I may flatten out a couple of rounds from the bundle of 3/4 inch Hanson W2 round bar I still have after all these years as an upgrade from the 1084 for that one.

I'd love to see that steampunk idea come through. Your fish knife is really cool!

My crazy plan?

Finding a way to make knifemaking profitable.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Yeah, I know. Now I feel sick to my stomach... :barf:

Really wish this was funnier than it is.

Happy New Year, gang!

best way to make it profitable is to sell your equipment and materials, lol... I know I haven't paid for this stuff with money made selling knives.

Nothing TOO crazy, but I've been thinking about doing a brass wire wrapped ferrule, in place of a traditional ferrule. That's after I reassemble my shop at my new place.

I am interested in making stainless damascus rings and jewelry. I tried a bunch earlier in the year without success and hope to work out a few issues and get some finished products available.

Talk to Delbert Ealy about them. He makes several types.

Tip:
Make a 6X1.5X1.5" billet, forge to a 1" round, twist the heck out of it, and slice discs. Drill out center to the degree needed, hammer work on a mandrel as needed, finish to 800 grit, etch, re-sand at 800.

Seeing this subforum is the only part of Bladeforums I nowdays frequent, and if I get my old job back beginning of January, I thought to do something completely outrageous and unheard of- make my first knife. I have everything planned out- starting with something relatively simple like kiridashi (progression over kaikens, kitchen knives, tantos, hunters, &c)...

Unfortunately, this place has spoiled me so expect thread with pleading and grovelling to help me lay my hands on a piece of Aldo's W2 when my first paycheck arrives (hopefully, AEB-L will be available locally). :)

And yes, this is seriously my New Year's resolution of a sort. :D

Bearsticker, Egyptian dagger, Harpoon, The Executioner...

But it all seems plain vanilla compared to Matthew. You no right in the head man. ;)

Happy New Year my friends!

I've been thinking of a Chinese cleaver of sorts, and after seeing Pablo's santukini I got this bright idea. .. :\
In honor of Pablo, I am dubbing these the SantoCleaver.

I wanna do a hidden tang in purple heart with silver inlay. Probably something simple-esque, like a boot knife or the like...

Matthew, Do you rely on knife making for 100% of your income...if I may ask? I could make more net dollars by mowing lawns in California than by working 60 hours a week making knives and I am completely serious with that comment. If you are making a living off knife making then you are my new hero. I know that a few people do make a living at it but very few do . I make knives every day but I am 65 years old and retired . Good luck to you and I like your knives. Larry Lehman

I want to finish all the bowies I've started (there are currently 5 in process), which will be my first ones. And though it isn't really out of the box anymore since I did 2 of the in 2015, I think a few fluted, wire wrapped daggers may happen.

Del has been a great help. I start with .010 shim stock of two stainless steels that he recommended and weld in a can. No problem. If I was trying to make flat stock, I would be fine. The problem comes when trying to forge round by hitting the sides of the billet, I get delaminations (same thing happens with stainless/carbon san mai as well) I even tried to turn the square billet round on a lathe and got delaminations too.
Any thoughts?
