something spooky

Great stories Kalama and wow, you're going back out, lol? I have many years experience in the bush and only have one story to tell. I was hunting deer one evening and was sitting with my back against a tree in a little clearing in the middle of a pine forest. As dusk approached a couple of small bucks made their way out of the swamp to my left and began to spar 20 yards in front of me. As it was past legal shooting light, I just sat and enjoyed the show. After a few minutes of pushing each other about, the deer suddenly broke off their confontation, looked behind me, snorted and took off. I figured it was a bigger buck coming out of the swamp.

As it was now getting farly dark, I got up and turned around to head back through the pines. As I turned, the air seemed to change and it got as quiet as I have ever heard it get in the bush. When I looked through the pines, they seemed to be standing out in stark contrast to everything else, if that makes any sense. Like black and white on colour - but the light between the trees was way brighter than anything else in my field of vision. Strangely, I felt no fear, but a bizarre combination of excitement and peace at the same time. As soon as I was about 10 yards inside the forest everything changed and was back to normal. When it changed, it felt like an electric snap had taken place and then that loud silence again.

I've hunted there a few times since with no repeats. Made no sense then and makes no sense now that I see it on paper. I grew up in the 70's so maybe some kind of flashback or an overactive mind, but this thread reminded me of that time.

Esav, thank you for the Kipling.

aloha snake dr. an thanks for the site very cool,i make my own snares with O-rings ,surgical rubber, para cord, dental floss,an nails,,,i snare the foot of the pigs,i try not to use wire because they can cut there hoof off,an para cord the pigs can chew it off ,an not be injured...

Shadow people.

Gotta love 'em.

I've felt one or two around and seen them in the periphery.

That picture of the one above the corn is somethin' else. I'll have to show that to a pal of mine.

Lot of crazy things can happen when you're all by yourself in duh wuhdz. I'm still thinking of going back to the old homeplace to see if that circle of white stones is still in those woods.

As far as I was raised, the belief is simply: you don't bother them, they won't bother you. I've always been told that when passing through creepy areas back home, when you start to get chicken skin, you say "Just passing through, not here to bother anyone". And then you continue on your way.

Uncanny! Some folk beliefs really are universally shared. Then again we are both from the Malay-Polynesian stock, so it must really be in the culture. Similar to our beliefs here, ask anyone who grew up in the provinces, especially those in the very rural areas; should you happen to pass by the wild or uninhabited woods or remote locations deep in the night, you have to give notice or "excuse" and say something similar to what you've posted to the unseen things; the elementals or spirits around.

Mankind does have some sort of shared "cultural memory". The belief in the invisible, elemental spirits residing in earthen mounds for example is universal. From the Gaelic/Irish "wee folk" inhabiting the sidhe to the Philippine nuno sa punso ("old man of the mound").

 I am part filipino as well, but never really got to know my filipino side, interesting to know it's shared! At least this pinoy can still enjoy the food :D

Hmmm...I think it's time to dig up some books on beliefs around the world...the stories have always fascinated me.

I was just in Hawaii and visited my girlfreind's brother and his wife who is of native heritage. She told me of a legend about the Hukai-po or "Night Marchers". These are warrior spirits that travel certain paths on the islands. I'll let you read up, but evidently seeing these warriors is not a particularly good omen.

the nite marchers are an very old tale, old dead hawaiian warriors killed in combat that still march to battle, piss in a circle then get to one knee with your head down, never looking them in the face if encountered.or you would join them in a never ending march, alot of old timers strongly believe in the marchers,my father lives in hana maui, some people claim to have seen them.there are the mu,menehunes, pele, the green man, morgans corner, pali,an alot more tales,,try type in or goggle (chicken skin ghost stories of hawaii, by mr. grant) some stories will give you chicken skin,,,aloha

When I was a child, my father and I would drive from South Eastern BC to Vancouver to see Mom, who was in university at the time. We always stopped off at the rest stops on Hwy 1 to stretch the legs and let the ol VW van engine cool down.

One time at one of the rest stops, i was running around the woods near it to burn off energy and find sticks to make swords. To this day I still remember the utterly frightening feeling i got when i came across a sunken depression in the forest floor. I suddenly stopped, a feeling of heat coming over my body, sweating, and a rapid heart rate. I tried to run away but my legs were stiff. I finally walked away adn ran back to the van. Didn't say a word to Dad, although he kept looking at my face and saying whats the matter, your skin is pure white, see a bear? and then he was laughing.

A few weeks later the Police dug up one of Clifford Olsens child victims from that exact spot in the woods.

Another time as an adult, i was walking thru the woods of Stanley Park Vancouver BC. Had the same reaction near a tiny mound under some trees. A few months later forensics's people dug up the skeletal remains of two children from that spot.

haven't had anything similar happen since then, except for "chicken skin' on my last hike when i found an outdoor grow op. Got out of there fast.

Yup, I was taught if you see the torches, you get right down on the ground, face in the dirt, don't make any noise, and wait for them to pass. If you look one in the eye, they'll take you with them...though if you have family marching with them, they shouldn't take you.

 for scoring that pua'a, Kalama. Take some pictures again when you throw em in. :)
