I have been holding off for a couple of days on posting this as I lent out my digital camera. I still don't have it back so I can't post the proof, but I think you all deserve to know just what kind of guy you're dealing with.

Some of you may remember that I broke my ankle couple of weeks ago. I have been stuck at home most of the time since then, and in fact my truck is not running so I have been really isolated here!

Do you know what MNeedham did?

He put together a box of books and magazines and sent it off to me to give me something to do.

But that's not all.

The box also contained 3 knife blanks and a thin slice of what I suspect to be oak? for cutting handle scales out of.

I would like to point out that I don't know MNeedham outside of WSS. We haven't been friends for ages, so he thought he would send me stuff. No! He only knows me as a member here, but he took the time and effort and expense to send me about fifteen pounds of top-flight entertainment.

I was really speechless when I opened the box, I can tell you that.

So here is the contents list:

3 books:

Survival is a Dying Art, by Barry Davies - this is a survival manual in the spirit of the SAS guide...all purpose, full of info on everything from plant identification to first aid to firelighting. Really a classic, very interesting.

Build the Perfect Survival Kit, by John D. McCann - I had been wanting to get a look at this book for a while. Breaks down the contents of different types of survival kits, advises on what kit contents apply to what activities. Again really interesting.

Primitive Living, Self-Sufficiency, and Survival Skills, by Thomas J. Elpel. I had never heard of this book before. I don't understand why not. It's a definite must read...sort of similar to the Kochanski book in a way...definitely about living in the bush, not just surviving til help arrives. I am finding this book extremely fascinating.

3 knife blanks, two classic hunter shaped smith&wesson, and a Russel Green Rivier, any of these would be awesome knives for dressing out game, I think;

The hardwood I can't identify - grain reminds me of the Garry Oaks that grew near my house when I was a kid, but they are specific to that area, I think. It is a very dense grain structure and hard...the tree would have been about twenty years old when cut down, and about three inches in diameter. I don't know the broadleaves well at all so this is a hard one for me!

March and May 2008 editions of Tactical Knives, May features a good article on the Rat RC-4 and some good bushcraft stuff, and March...well, I almost don't want to get started, lots of great knifemakers in there!

Current AG Russel Catalogue to help lighten my wallet, important as it sits over my bad leg;

January through April of Blade - I'll be honest, I have spent so much time looking at Primitive Living I have yet to crack these open (which is great as I need LOTS of distraction these days;

And finally, the true survival literature. How did we get by before these?

5 issues, beginning in October 2007, of Penthouse. Did you know Taya Parker won Erotic Entertainer of the Year 2007? I have seen why. It was a clean win, guys. Good work Taya!

You know I hardly even know what to say...all this stuff had to be shipped to Canada, this wasn't like a buck and a quarter to mail a magazine, this was effort and expense, for a complete stranger. I mean what do you say about that?

Most of my life has been spent with pretty gruff people and I am not used to people doing things like this for me at all. I was really taken aback when I opened up the box, really touched.

So I will get pics up when the camera gets back to me, but in the meantime, take it from me: MNeedham is 100% top flight material, really above and beyond. I mean absolutely above and beyond, man.

So thank you, MNeedham, and thanks to everyone who read this. Now you know what kind of guy you're dealing with...the best.

Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to spend some time with Erica Ellyson, 2008 Pet of the Year (it's another clean win.)

Kudos to you MNeedham, you sir - are a class act!

Get well soon misanthropist - Enjoy the Penthouse(possible W&SS pass around material?!?)

Wow, what a great random act of kindness. :thumbup:

So amazing in fact that I fell out of my chair and broke my ankle ;)

Now THIS is a prime example of why this forum rocks!!!! :thumbup:

M, proud to have you on here, and you too, misanthropist. It's the members here that make this place special, and this kind of thing demonstrates that there are real people behind the posts, living real lives, and the power of the internet is when it brings folks together in positive ways outside of the internet.

Misanth, why the hell do you need Penthouse when you have a hottie right at home?

It's people like that, who make this forum a great place. I've always wanted to send stuff to people in down times , but it's hard to get penthouses and knife blanks at 15.

Well, this way it's like having lots of threesomes.

Also I wanted to say that of all the forums I've ever been on, this place is definitely the most "positive" place...really is a totally different vibe than the rest of the internet. This really is an example of why this forum rocks!

Now hes probably wanting you to ship him back a package containing pictures of your girlfriend :D.

But in all seriousness that is an amazing gesture and goes to show the kindness of people on this forum.

MNeedham you are truely a great person

Wow, that was some kind hearted actions! Get well soon, but don't hurt yourself with those other, ahem, non-knife mags :)

That just plain rocks! :thumbup: I like to think of everybody on here as bro's, even though we haven't met in person. This is exactly why.

This actually doesn't suprise me about MNeedham, or this community in general. I've found in the past that the knife community is crowded with top shelf quality people.

Way to go MN!! Your nessmuk just got bumped to the front of the line.

Aha! Now we see the real reason he did it! I need to send something and tell NWA about it. :D

Just kidding, this was an extremely generous gesture. It's good to see that there are still people like this out there. Living in a big city with everyone always bustling around too busy for anyone other than themselves turns you into a cynic. MN just reversed the flow.

Way to go MNeedham, you are living example of what makes this forum a true community. More than once I've been on the receiving end of other members' kindness and generosity. Taking care of the BF WS patch orders is one of the ways I'm trying to "Pay It Forward". This forum rocks.
