I have been holding off for a couple of days on posting this as I lent out my digital camera. I still don't have it back so I can't post the proof, but I think you all deserve to know just what kind of guy you're dealing with.
Some of you may remember that I broke my ankle couple of weeks ago. I have been stuck at home most of the time since then, and in fact my truck is not running so I have been really isolated here!
Do you know what MNeedham did?
He put together a box of books and magazines and sent it off to me to give me something to do.
But that's not all.
The box also contained 3 knife blanks and a thin slice of what I suspect to be oak? for cutting handle scales out of.
I would like to point out that I don't know MNeedham outside of WSS. We haven't been friends for ages, so he thought he would send me stuff. No! He only knows me as a member here, but he took the time and effort and expense to send me about fifteen pounds of top-flight entertainment.
I was really speechless when I opened the box, I can tell you that.
So here is the contents list:
3 books:
Survival is a Dying Art, by Barry Davies - this is a survival manual in the spirit of the SAS guide...all purpose, full of info on everything from plant identification to first aid to firelighting. Really a classic, very interesting.
Build the Perfect Survival Kit, by John D. McCann - I had been wanting to get a look at this book for a while. Breaks down the contents of different types of survival kits, advises on what kit contents apply to what activities. Again really interesting.
Primitive Living, Self-Sufficiency, and Survival Skills, by Thomas J. Elpel. I had never heard of this book before. I don't understand why not. It's a definite must read...sort of similar to the Kochanski book in a way...definitely about living in the bush, not just surviving til help arrives. I am finding this book extremely fascinating.
3 knife blanks, two classic hunter shaped smith&wesson, and a Russel Green Rivier, any of these would be awesome knives for dressing out game, I think;
The hardwood I can't identify - grain reminds me of the Garry Oaks that grew near my house when I was a kid, but they are specific to that area, I think. It is a very dense grain structure and hard...the tree would have been about twenty years old when cut down, and about three inches in diameter. I don't know the broadleaves well at all so this is a hard one for me!
March and May 2008 editions of Tactical Knives, May features a good article on the Rat RC-4 and some good bushcraft stuff, and March...well, I almost don't want to get started, lots of great knifemakers in there!
Current AG Russel Catalogue to help lighten my wallet, important as it sits over my bad leg;
January through April of Blade - I'll be honest, I have spent so much time looking at Primitive Living I have yet to crack these open (which is great as I need LOTS of distraction these days;
And finally, the true survival literature. How did we get by before these?
5 issues, beginning in October 2007, of Penthouse. Did you know Taya Parker won Erotic Entertainer of the Year 2007? I have seen why. It was a clean win, guys. Good work Taya!
You know I hardly even know what to say...all this stuff had to be shipped to Canada, this wasn't like a buck and a quarter to mail a magazine, this was effort and expense, for a complete stranger. I mean what do you say about that?
Most of my life has been spent with pretty gruff people and I am not used to people doing things like this for me at all. I was really taken aback when I opened up the box, really touched.
So I will get pics up when the camera gets back to me, but in the meantime, take it from me: MNeedham is 100% top flight material, really above and beyond. I mean absolutely above and beyond, man.
So thank you, MNeedham, and thanks to everyone who read this. Now you know what kind of guy you're dealing with...the best.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to spend some time with Erica Ellyson, 2008 Pet of the Year (it's another clean win.)
