I'm trying to figure out whether you are talking about the goats or the dog.. ;)

If i ever have a property big enough i would love to have some goats and Geese. Have you tried to use the goats for backpacking.. I heard that depands on the breed they can carry between 20-40lb.

I had one of those dogs years ago. He was about 150 pounds, had a great disposition, and a ton of hair!

I saw something like that here in the pines. I would say it would be the Jersey Devil. LOL

Saanens? Do you milk them? My dad used to have Saanens back when he milked goats. Now he raises Boer goats and Cheviot sheep for meat and milks a Jersey cow.... The cow also gives us a steer to eat or a heifer to sell each year.

Yeah, ...if I was one of the four legged creatures living in the hollow,

…I too would be scared when I saw YOU coming down the trail.

Goats are fun, but I tried raising some Boers and I swear... those things are born looking for a place to die. I do enjoy Pyrenees, though. Here are my two girls as pups...

No never done it but saanens are one of the better breeds for it because of their size.

But usually you want a big wether(castrated male) as a pack goat from what they tell me. Although the guy that wrote the book on it said something abut taking a miker with you and making yogurt in the bottom of a sleeping bag:cool:

If I ever have time I'd like to train some. They love to follow you thru the woods so that part would be no problem. It's easy to teach them to jump up in a truck topper too. The hard part would be getting them to go thru water. Goats hate gettng their feet wet. But if you bottle fed them and always fed them their bottle in the creek I think you could get them to cross streams.

Used to be the president of a state goat assoc here and we had a guy who was a scoutmaster who had pack goats. He was also a doctor and had the $$ and bought the really nice pack saddles for them too. He had some trouble with them but he was always taking them out with scouts, and not quite enough to get them really used to it.

He told me a story about them going on an overnighter and when they woke up all the goats were gone. They looked everywhere no luck. Hiked a few miles back to the truck and there they all were:D So I'd think part of the training would be to sleep with them outside so they'd get used to bedding down with you.

Probably try to do it when I retire. More time to train them right.
