We had some trees thinned on our property recently and my son decided to try his hand at a debris shelter. His only tool was a Cold Steel Barong.

Awesome! I used to love doing that when I was his age (haven't quite outgrown it either). I can't wait until my daughter is big enough to do that.

Awesome HJ!!!!! I like the look of a boy with a huge knife. Makes me misty.

Cool shelter, looks like he had fun with that project!!!

BTW, sent you an email.

How do you like that barong machete? I've been looking real hard at those. Looks like a good alternative to the 12" tramontina, not that I'm looking to replace the tramontina, just like options. :-)

It's great that you have got your kid interested in this stuff so early, he will remember it for life !!!!

The shelter looks great as well but tell your son he should put 5 times that amount of leaves on next time !!!!!

Looks like a good job. My daughter and i made this one in GA. Nothing like a forest with deep pine needles. Mac

I know this may sound stupid, but what is a debis shelter. I have never heard of these. I tried yahoo search but no dice.??

Thanks everyone. My son is also very grateful for all the encouragement. His goal was to make a shelter in less than an hour and that was the result.

He also toook a primitive living skills class last summer and learned to forage, make fire, cordage and flintknapping.
