Well, my dumb dog got bit again tonight...

It's been a few weeks, so I was hoping we made it through the "season", but no such luck. She was bit as probably 10 times this year (3 times in one week ) Bulldogs = hardheaded. I heard about some guys that beat the snot out of their dogs with real (dad) rattlesnakes to teach them to stay away, but I'm not sure it would work with bulldogs... Here she is as it's just starting to swell (see the glassy eyes.) She'll be swole up and grumpy for a day or two, seems to be very painful. It'll swell at least twice this size by morning...

I really think it's time to look into some barn cats. We live in a wooded neighborhood, loads of trees and leaves, with a creek running behind our house. It's just a matter of time before they come into the house or get one of my daughters (we had a very close call last year on the driveway with my 11 year old...) Man, it's like a plague or something.

Anyway, if any of you wondered if a Silent Knight makes a good user, it works wonders on small copperheads :D

BTW, I know that many of you are nature lovers and think I'm cruel to kill snakes... Sorry to be offensive (really), but poisonous snakes will die within my fenced yard, period. They are simply too dangerous too tolerate

:) :)

Wow, your dog is really willing to take one for the team.

BTW, I like the snake charmer you have there. Strong medicine!

I have no problems with someone taking care of their own. I can not imagine what it must be like to have such nasties so close at hand. None of this - "well they were there first BS" - sorry I am here now!

Yup - I would be out charming them with a good Busse as well - got to set up your perimeter.:D

Too dangerous? Only if you step on them... They aren't out there to get humans-- or dogs. Without snakes around, your house would become a rat sanctuary...

One tough doggy. I've never dealt much with poisonous snakes so I don't know what to tell ya. One of the few problems Detroit doesn't have.

Hope your girl is feeling better soon. Sure sounds like a tough one.

Perfectly reasonable to kill poisonous snakes on your property if you ask me. I'm a big nature lover myself but when they bother your animals and possibly your kids you got to get rid of them.

Cool pics by the way.

Rat snakes are welcome, the more the merrier

Copperheads and cottonmouths lose their heads ;)

Well, can't blame you for that... But, it looks like you have some cool sheath inlay material on your hands now! :D Are ya gonna use the skin?

If they stay where they belong I don't kill most poisonous snakes but when they get where I don't want them I separate them from their head. They would do about the same to me. It's a shame because both copperheads and most rattlers are beautiful animals. Cottonmouth watermoccasins however are some ugly, mean SOBs and I gladly part them with the ole bush ax.

What about rattlesnakes?:D

Thankfully we don't see many of them around here...:)

In South and West Texas, I am definitely always wearing snake boots. I have a friend who lost his uncle to a Rattlesnake bite --- he knelt down to pick something up and the people who were standing 100 yards away said it sounded like someone hit him in the neck with a baseball bat. He died within minutes. Dangerous animals to say the least.

Jaxx, here's a pic of that Copperhead that "almost" got my daughter --- he now resides on her tomahawk sheath:

Eli,
Sorry about the little girl Bro!!! I support ya on whatever means nessessary to keep to grounds safe. I shot and hacked several rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths down there growing up in Austin and the Hillcountry A/O. You know what I mean when I say pull the johnboat over towards you, and don't push it away. Seen to many cottonmouths comeout POed and wanting to fight/bit.

I love snakes. I have raised at least 400 snakes in my lifetime, but have a respect for them. Even though my oldest ink has me tagged as "Snake Man", snakes get remodeled if they are a danger to me or mine. Good on you Bro, and that Copperhead's skin is beautiful. You should send it in for one our leather stitchers.

Let me know if she ever has pups (especially a heeler cross) seems I only love dumb dogs.

Take care of her Eli and keep the SK handy.
Keep them safe

Our rattlesnakes get along a lot better with our Busses. :D Heres a Tiger rattlesnake checking out an ASH...

Diamondback rattlesnakes account for approximately 95% of all serpent related fatalities in the US.

Usually, when you separate them from their heads, when you pick up the body, the body will attempt several "headless" strikes at your hand or arm. Of course, with no head, one has nothing to fear, but it is still a little spooky to see this activity going on 30 minutes later. Do you see the same thing in copperheads?

BTW, nice pics!

My good Knight,

dispatch those vermon~

Hate to see your Bull DAWG like that.:o:mad:

I had my lab swell up like a charpe ...or rednec SHarp ey:confused:

last year and it scared me. You could tell it ws painful. THe vet tried to tell me it wasnt a snake but after seeing your pic. I believe otherwise,

Hate to sound gruesome, but post a pic when its bad tomorrow.

How long does it last. Few days? and then just go away or what.

Figured that one has to be fairly immune by now:D:thumbup:

I hope your dog is OK mate, still, if she’s been bit ten times this season she’s probably got a fair immunity to then by now.

They don’t usually get a second chance with our snakes here. The Red Belly Blacks if given antivenin they generally make it. Eastern Browns, Tigers, Death Adders or the Australian Copper Head generally means it’s all over bar the shoutin’

I’ve lost some good working dogs and plenty of horses from snakes, so I’m not a great lover of them. :D
I have a rule here, if they stay out in the bush where they belong, I leave them alone. If they come into the house paddock they are introduced to a S/S Merkel and No 9 shot.

Stan doesn’t seem to go after them, and most of my dogs have always learned to keep away from them, but not all.

I used to have a working heeler named “Stupid” :D and while managing a cattle property years ago I had just knocked off for the day and was getting a cold drink when I started to hear all of the dogs barking at the back of the homestead, I went out and witnessed a Western Brown (a big fella too) biting old stupid on the neck. I always kept a .shortened 410 under the settee on the verandah for snakes around the house.
I grabbed the gun as the snake was heading into the tractor shed. I took a snap shot at him as he was nearly under a concrete slab in the shed, so only got him in the tail.
I then walked back to Stupid as he was already over on his side and quivering. He was dead in less than two minutes. There are not many second chances with those big buggers.

When children are at risk you should have every right to dispatch every one you find around the house IMO.

Anyway good luck with your dog xaman
