I bought a Buck Crosslock about 1995. It was nice with a drop point bead blast blade that was extremely sharp. Not sure of the steel. I guess the pivot screw got loose and blade fell off. i could not seem to get the blade back on as there were washers that need to go back in but there were no room to do so. Sent it back to buck and they sent me a piece of junk buck odyysey with a dull blade. I dont think the warranty trade was any where close to being equivalent. I know the croslock was a used item but thats what the lifetime warranty should have covered.

That's a bummer.
I am assuming they don't make the Crosslock anymore?

Before sending your knife in:
Did you read the warranty? Specifically the part that reads: "We will repair your knife, including parts, labor and or replacement with a new knife at our discretion. Keep in mind, repair is not always possible or practical. We will replace your knife with the same or one that is comparable if your knife is no longer available. Please note if your knife has sentimental value when you send the knife to us."
Did you phone them to find out what the replacement model would be if yours was not repairable?
Did you at least put a note in with the knife asking to be contacted before taking any action if it was not repairable?

Since receiving your replacement:
Have you contacted them to see what other options you might have?
Did they tell you you are out of luck?

If you answered "No" to most of these questions, you might be a little premature in your complaint. Try giving them another chance to make you happy. Ask for their help rather than telling them what they did wrong and I bet you will find that they will do just about anything within reason to help you be happy with them.

Sorry to hear about your experience. My own has been considerably different. A Buck Crosslock was my first experience with a one handed opening knife with a pocket clip. That is still an outstanding knife, with a big beefy blade, decent edge geometry and sharpens great. At the price point it was pretty hard to beat. I lost mine unfortunately and was pretty bummed about it. I mentioned it here in a post and you know what happened? Buck sent me one of their brand new Crosslock IIs, the ones with the aluminum handles etc. I thought that was pretty darned impressive customer service. Basically just because they are good folks they sent me a brand new knife to replace the one I lost. Then get this. A few months later the sent me another crosslock of the old pattern just like the one I had lost. It seems someone was cleaning out a desk drawer and found it. How friggin cool is that!? Buck bar none has some of the best customer service out there in my experience.

Buck has the best customer service in the industry, hands down.Check your attitude and try with them again in a polite and respectful manner and im sure they will take care of you.

I did call them back about the Oddy. The person told me what they gave me was just as "good as the croslock". I looked at the Oddy and knew that was not true. Was not "into" knives back then as i am now, did not want to keep arguing with the guy. The Oddy line has been discontinued permanently, not redesigned like the croslock. So why didnt they just send me an updated croslock, instead of something they just wanted to get rid of. And no the ODDY has not increased in price since it was dropped, there was no love for it. I apologize for originally entering this into the general knife discussions, kind of a newbie here next time ill know.

Hmm...that's really unfortunate to hear. Unless there's something I'm missing, it seems like Buck's customer service (and their fulfillment of their warranty obligations) has really failed to live up to its reputation in this case.

Buck is as famous for standing behind their work as for the knives themselves. If you are not pleased, then contact them again.

Buck knives has their own forum under the Manufacturers section. Have you tried posting a question on there about the Odyssey knife you were given in exchange for your Crosslock and if that is their usual substitution? They might be willing to swap it for you if you ask, but be sure to do it respectfully.

Buck is well known for their great customer service but they do on ocassion screw up like anybody can when humans are involved. I'll bet they take care of you if you ask.

A couple of points. Buck still makes the Crosslock. They released a new one with a camo handle just last month. The second point is that, in your shoes, I would be thrilled that someone replaced a 15 year old used knife for me, regardless of the knife sent. We have a pretty spoiled society if we complain about that, I would think.

Good advise by all. One of the downfalls of the internet world is the access to a computer during times of frustration. I think if we (me included) observed a 10 minute ruls or better yet slept on it we would be better served both individually and as a society.
Approach Buck again and in a respectful way articulate your position and give an opportunity for resolution.

I would agree with this view. Also, they likely thought you screwed up the knife, which would void the warranty, as ive never heard of or seen one simply fall apart.

Perhaps but if it had been of sentimental value i'd be a little ticked, although i might have contacted them first to see how they deal with things like that
cheers

He is spoiled because he wants them to stand behind the lifetime warranty?
