Where could I find a usable tomahawk. Most of those that I found said that the metal was designed for throwing but would not stand up to chopping use.

I have a Rogers Rangers spike 'hawk made by American Tomahawk Company (this model is now currently produced by Bear Mountain), a Cold Steel riflemans 'hawk, and one made by H&B forge.

I've used all three for both throwing and chopping and they've held up just fine.

Ranger Knives makes a tomahawk as well as an entry tool that look like serious business. I don't personally own any of their models, but I know people who do, including a soldier deployed in Afghanistan, and they seem to like them.

I probably should have been a little more clear about what I was looking for. I'm really looking for a traditional frontier style without a spike. Kind of like the kind that they traded in the early days in America or Native American style.

Edit: Those at H&B Forge looked great.

Coldsteel Riflemans hawk, has the weight and shape for chopping. Made with 5150.

You could also support our custom makers on the forum and pick any steel you desire !!

What have you all experienced with the CS Tomahawks. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews.

My riflemans hawk is one nice tool, was like $30 canadian, and I have a few time taken it over my wetterlings. It really takes a beating, holds an edge along time, just over all an awsome piece for the price.

Here are some pics.

I bought my CS riflemans 'hawk back in early 1994 when they had much better quality control. I've used it so heavily that the original black paint finish long ago wore off and has been replaced by a brown patina. Quality of edge & edge retention are both pretty good.

The CS 'hawks I've seen for the last 8 years though seem to have the victim of shabby quality control. I've often seen warped blades, canted hammer polls and and sloppy off-centered eyes.

Eesh, sure glad mine was fine. :D

My ATC rogers rangers spike 'hawk and CS riflemans 'hawk with an Ontario RAT-7 for scale. The handles aren't the originals as I found them too short and made my own...

I really like those handles. That's the look that I'm looking for.

Here's a link to a good source, Ft. Turner: http://www.fortturner.com/store/index.htm

Fonly's great pics show why most hawks are not as good for spliting vs. a good axe. Look at the shoulder where the blade meets the cheek of the hawk.

I really like those too. Look like they could take a beating. The Iroquois is the design that I really like. Some tacks and designs like one Wolf_1989's would really top it off.

The head on Fonly's CS looks pretty good... and fairly new.

Hopefully it looks like Cold Steel did something about the quality control issue.

i recently had justin at ranger knives make me a hawk with a hammer poll on it instead of the spike. works great

2 years. been using it at least 3 times a week ever sense I got it, it's held up well.

If you need to fix the itch of owning a hawk, then get a heavier one. If its chopping and splitting ability you want, for god sakes get an axe.

I also like the idea of a tomahawk, but I don't know why. What is my justification for needing one of these? What will it do that my hatchet won't?

Check out Ranger knives! Justin makes some killer hawks & he will customize one for you & his prices are hard to beat for a custom blade! & his service is great!
