BTW hows the removable handle version coming along?

Thank God! some buddy to the rescue of ol' vec ...har...!

thanks, brother...!

the removable handles are slowly forming ...i have a couple designs right now and should probably get back on top of them ...i just made it over a peak doing some tooling and i should probably bite down and do some more while i am still productive.

....the biggest problem with the removable handles was that the eyes on the CS hawks might not all be the same ...i'm not too worried about that though ...i just want to make stuff that has no "gripe factor" ...i am sure the brethren here know what i mean ...no headaches....

the fixed handles seem to be as tough as the heads themselves so far ...so i don't know what to think ...hehehe...!

i made them to last.

when i get the ATAX handle done i'll probably turn to the take downs and the removable handles, God Willing....

thanks for asking!

you sure it's okay to post pics here...?

i don't wanna get slapped again.

....:)....

That's what I am talking about. How do they chop? Chris

here's my alaskan guide buddy ringin' one out;

link

you decide, brother chris.

i think they chop pretty well ...most of the points about hawks is not that they can outchop a hatchet or an axe, it's that they are so light to carry, they can do comparable work to the others, plus serve better as a weapon and take a lot less energy in all of the above.

like i said, i love a good axe ...i just like a hawk better in general.

a long knife, a chisel, a good saw, and a hawk, and i am pretty happy out there in the boonies.

the brother who you see in the post, like myself, has always loved the Gerber Camp Axe, but he is dumping it for a 24 inch hawk.

long hawks are my favorite.

YMMV

What kind of coating is on the Hawk that looks like a plastic model?

What kind of coating is on the Hawk that looks like a plastic model?

that is plastic rough spray paint...!

it's an experiment ...the cordura wrapped handles are better overall IMO ...i like them because they seem to be quiet too ...but more expensive to produce.

i figure that if we oil our guns, and hone our sharps ...why not just (at the end of the season) just lightly sand your hawk's surface and give it another coat of spray paint ...this is textured spray paint for plastic and i think it will work pretty well.

(the hawk handle is made out of high-strength epoxies and additives ...so the paint is mostly aesthetic in design, and affords extra protection that the handle probably does not need ...unless you left it in the sun maybe for a year or so ...i don't know yet, except from my aerospace composites background, which tells me that i am right ...but i always want to prove it...:)....)

i like to spray paint right over the edge, for rust protection when the hawk is static ...a couple pecks and the paint sheds away only where the blade is making contact.

the light texture to this paint is pleasurable, and it comes in good colors.

i like it so far.

i am a bowhunter and love to have different camo in different areas, so a tomahawk that you could personalize (like this variety) makes sense to me.

....the deer and turkeys probably don't give a damn, but it is fun to do, if nothing else ...hehehe...!

..............

brother macclint,

good to see you here.

i need to do some drawings and animation on my site for demonstration, but by "pecking" over "chopping" i am essentially trying to say that you are taking low energy/deep penetration strikes at the target with a hawk from your wrist mostly, ...vice those big gross-motor swings you see the lumberjacks do with their axes.

you are barely holding onto the hawk handle when you use it.

more like a sword than an axe...;

i think of a beaver.

....he's in no hurry ....he just chews through, and damn well.

that, to me, is what i want to see in good hawk technique for woodwork, etc.

you should be able to work all day.

low energy.

....a hawk, for my uses, ...is a compromise in most cases between a saw and an axe ...and technically you can use a poll'd hawk with a short blade as a chisel too, but i prefer to carry one of those when i am going deep in the outback for a while, along with a long, light knife (minimally)....

a proper hawk is a weight savings for the afoot outdoorsman to carry.

i also like the little hammer poll on a good hawk head design, over a spike.

i couldn't find one that i liked, hence this Hawk Project.

....did i confuse the issue even more...?!!!

i did, didn't i...! dang hawk fervor....

....har...!
