Southern Grind Bad Monkey Comparison Pics

Their hollow/flat. Most of the net pics I have seen look pretty close to the same to me.

I wish we could. The reason we can not is because we quit carrying the Hollow Grind. Honestly we could not tell a bit of difference without a super detailed look. and the Hollow Grinds rarely sold compared to the flat grind.

I gotcha, no problem. From the way mine looks I will go with it being flat as well.

Now the only thing I have to decide is whether I want to go with OD green g10 or carbon fiber for my next one with a satin blade...

Hey Whitty... Maybe you can convince them to do a dealer exclusive high flat or full flat grind with the wave, full stonewash and carbon fiber handle scales. Ide buy one for sure!

That is what I am leaning toward at the moment. Have to try and hold off on any purchases until after the first of the year. I could have gotten one for Christmas but I went with a Hest Milspec instead. Figured I would branch out from ZT and give one a try. Although the pics of the satin Bad Monkey have me second guessing my choice haha.

So I had a mishap! Dropped my bad monkey! As I watched it spiral slowly to the ground in horror I realized it was going to hit on the pommel end. It was closed and hit the ground right on the butt end, recoiles the blade open flips 180 degrees and hits square on the tip. ON CERAMIC TILE! I figured for sure there would be a chip. I am happy to report that the steel handled it with aplomb! Just a small little spot right on the tip blunted. Here is a pic. The blunted section is about .5mm by .5mm. I will report back when the resharpening has occurred. Otherwise I am happy that a steel that is hardened to 60 just basically rolled/blunted instead of chipping.

Lol, it is crazy how when you drop a knife it seems like a slow motion event where all you can do is watch, helpless. Keep us posted on the sharpening results.

Haha yeah...............good luck with that!

Thanks, it is not an easy thing to do that is for sure. I have been looking at the one on usamadeblade the last two days telling myself that I must resist the powers of the dark side.

Ok... I sharpen my knives on a 1x30 belt sander with dedicated sharpening belts. Every knife I have gets a mirror polished convexed edge. This method is actually more difficult to learn than hand sharpening because you can wreck a blade in a matter of seconds. I sharpen all my buddies', coworkers', family's and even some forum member's knives with this method. I have sharpened everything from 440a to CPM 3V and everything in between. I usually set my edges with the belt sander and then hand sharpen and strop all of my blades thereafter.

My unscientific assessment of the 14C28N is that it sharpens like 1095 steel. Easy to sharpen and takes a rediculous edge and polishes very well. The edge can be described as sticky. After my knife's encounter with the ceramic tile and no chipping combined, with the ease of sharpening, I am happy! This steel is a great user steel! Gets scary sharp easily, seems relatively tough at 60hrc, resists chipping and should have excellent corrosion resistance. The average hand sharpener should be able to easily maintain a good working edge with a strop loaded with black compound. A set of spyderco medium and fine pocket stones combined with a strop or a spydie ultrafine stone would be sufficient for most sharpening beyond regular maintenance. Here is a pic of my repair. This took about 45 seconds. 15 seconds on each belt and then a pass on the buffing wheel.

We are actually talking to them about a dealer exclusive, but it has been very little talk. I think we will pursue something hard with them in 2015. I will be looking for all the feedback I can get when we get to that point!

That blade fixed up nice Riz!

I will be looking forward to possible exclusive choices as well Whitty!

Looking forward to seeing what develops. The specs from Riz sound pretty good to me! --> "high flat or full flat grind with the wave, full stonewash and carbon fiber handle scales"

Sorry for the delay but here are the pics I promised!

Hope these help! If any of you want other pics just let me know!

Nice pics Whitty! I put my original factory clip back on mine. It is fully functional and it really just completes the look of the knife (I also put my Emerson clips back on my Emerson knives haha). I have owned a Military and for such a large blade it has a really thin tip. I know a lot of people love it and the Para, and I am not saying that they arent both great blades, but I would take a Bad Monkey any day over either of those.

14c28n at 61hrc breaks at almost 45 degrees, s30v and all other high wear resistant steels breaks at 15-20 degrees. Not that is matters but I'd take that toughness over high wear resistant steels.

Do you have any references such as published data for that? I ask because I really love 14C28N.

Though I do not have a knife from Bad Monkey my experience with 14C28N has mainly been in customs. Did a video I while back of 410 od cuts through cardboard with a custom Lannys Clip in 14C28N and it could still cut newsprint with the grain and easily cut printer paper.

It is IMO a VERY underrated steel at properly heat treated and geometry is a hard steel to beat if you want ease of sharpening, high edge stability, good wear resistance, good corrosion resistance and toughness.
